Trump may fire missiles and close major roads in California during 'No Kings' protests, US military clarifies on live fi

Source: Economic Times

Four months after millions of people across the country protested President Donald Trump’s actions, organizers of the “No Kings” rallies have planned a second event for Saturday, Oct. 18. Dozens of demonstrations will take place across Southern California, including Beverly Hills, Hollywood, Downtown L.A., Pico Robertson, Venice, and Santa Monica, protesting the administration’s policies amid the ongoing government shutdown.

At the same time, the Los Angeles Times reported, citing unconfirmed sources from California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office, that parts of Interstate 5 in Oceanside could be closed on Friday and Saturday due to an event marking the 250th anniversary of the US Marine Corps, which will feature live artillery firing.

Media outlet MediaTouch, citing unnamed sources, reported that the Trump administration “may launch missiles from Warships into California.” Regarding the I-5 closure, the report states: "Sources close to MeidasTouch describe the closure as part of a 'vanity parade' that may involve Navy warships shooting live missiles into Camp Pendleton as a 'show of force.'” The report does not provide further details. According to the LA Times, the artillery firing event may lead to I-5 closures but is not related to the planned ‘No Kings’ protests in Oceanside.

It's mostly right wing and they are playing it down to sound as if it's a routine exercise.

But it also reports this: "Media outlet MediaTouch, citing unnamed sources, reported that the Trump administration “may launch missiles from Warships into California.” Regarding the I-5 closure, the report states: "Sources close to MeidasTouch describe the closure as part of a 'vanity parade' that may involve Navy warships shooting live missiles into Camp Pendleton as a 'show of force.'”

Despite the misspelling of MeidasTouch, it does quote that much more reliable source.

I was waiting for an appointment and had to go in and didn't want this information to be overlooked. So, I went with what I could find in a hurry.

And it explicitly states that no public highways will be closed. There will be live fires so that may refer to artillery firing from the beach or other firing points. It appears rumors got ahead of fact once again, which is not surprising given the political climate.

More than 15,000 Marines, Navy sailors, veterans, and their families are expected to attend the celebration, which will feature a live amphibious assault demonstration, a review of amphibious strength, and keynote remarks from national military leaders and dignitaries. Joining Vice President Vance on stage will be Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, Secretary of the Navy John C. Phelan, and Marine Corps Commandant General Eric M. Smith.

If they weren't there I would consider it.

Naval guns do not target CONUS from offshore.
Especially firing over a lifeline between LA and SD.

Newsom warns of missiles over I-5, but freeway will remain open during live-fire Camp Pendleton event

The Marine Corps said I-5 will remain open after Gov. Gavin Newsom raised concerns that Navy ships will fire live ordnance over the freeway during a military celebration.
Newsom’s office criticizes the Trump administration for lack of coordination on the Camp Pendleton event featuring Vice President JD Vance and 15,000 attendees.
SACRAMENTO — Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office backed off plans to close parts of Interstate 5 on Thursday after mounting tension with federal and military officials over a White House-directed live-fire event off Camp Pendleton’s coast.

The governor’s office had said Wednesday that it was weighing the closure amid safety concerns about reports that Navy ships would fire live ordnance over the freeway onto the base during the Marine Corps’ 250th-anniversary celebration. By Wednesday evening, the Marine Corps insisted that “no highways or transportation routes will be closed” following a detailed risk assessment.

huge No Kings Protests so it should have little effect on the protests, BUT a huge impact on weekend traffic - HUGE. A closure that impactful would have to be given weeks if not months in advance to the public with alternative routes advertised.

It’s called Trestles. It’s a right and left breaking wave over a cobblestone bottom. Getting there through the military reservation once put you at risk of arrest. It’s jointly operated with the adjacent State Beach now. Very popular. Waves are currently 4-5’, good conditions, 20-40 surfers in the water

Ps. If you want to get technical, there are actually two breaks at Trestles, Upper and Lower. Lower is often the better of the two and more competitive. View a live cam at Surfline.com.

A couple of points: I-5 to LA from SD runs along the coast. Two trainlines also run parallel the coast and freeway. The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner and the San Diego transit Coaster. Both beautiful rides especially at sunset.

In my younger days I visited many surf spots, and took off on some crazy waves - a win is when I'm here to talk about it.

Shortly before 10 p.m. Pacific time on Wednesday, the Marines issued a statement explaining what it had in store. They said they would host a “live-fire Amphibious Capabilities Demonstration” at Red Beach, which is west of the freeway. They also said the exercise would occur on “approved training ranges and comport with established safety protocols” without the need to close public roads.

“All air, surface and ground movements are scripted and rehearsed in accordance with standard operating procedures and established safety checklists,” the Marines said.

A related celebration is scheduled to take place afterward at Del Mar Beach, less than 10 miles south.

.On Thursday, Mr. Newsom expressed relief that the Marines said their celebration would not require the closure of Interstate 5. But he blamed the Trump administration for confusion over the plans in recent days.
