Nebraskans rip proposed regulations on medical cannabis at public hearing

Testifiers criticize Medical Cannabis Commission for absence
By: Erin Bamer - October 15, 2025 6:18 pm

LINCOLN — Green shirts filled a hearing room in Lincoln full of Nebraskans who support the legalization of medical cannabis but oppose the regulations of the product proposed by the state’s new Medical Cannabis Commission.

Thirty-two people testified against the proposed regulations Wednesday. None spoke in support. Testifiers argued the regulations would not be feasible for most people needing medical cannabis, and roughly half called out commissioners for not attending the hearing to listen to their concerns.

“I feel like Nebraska just wants to make it as uncomfortable and unbearable as possible,” said testifier Nathan Brown.

In 2024’s general election, 71% of Nebraska voters voted to legalize medical cannabis, and 67% voted to create the new regulatory commission. Since December, Nebraskans have been able to legally possess up to 5 ounces of medical cannabis, so long as they have a health care practitioner’s recommendation.

Treat it like other fairly harmless drug plants like Coffee, Tea etc. There are no limits on caffeine, even though overdosing can give you a heart attack.

Because they use a test that detects the presence of cannabis, not the level of inebriation in the person, and since cannabis can remain in one's system for weeks, even though the effects are long gone, they know that they have a ready cash cow.

Also with the seizure laws that some places managed to get implemented, they make out like fat cats with every cannabis arrest.

You think they want to lose that? Either the city or the police force?

It has been an uphill battle for finally getting the idiocy to remove their draconian cannabis laws. And, all of the resistance is because of profit.

Hmm... I wonder when that became the number one desire in US life?

Marijuana stays in urine generally 30 days. If you are driving under the influence, a urine test is not evidence and no jury at a trial with a competent defense lawyer is going to convict based on that. If it happens to you, go to the urgent care, Emergency Dept, get a blood test. If it ain't in your blood, you aren't impaired. Probation conditions, different story. However, as it is decriminalized in many states nowadays that isn't going to get you violated anymore.

Which brings us to, the racism. Places that don't decriminalize marijuana want to use it to oppress members of their (usually non-white) community and want it to be the basis of a probation or parole violation.

As for money, yes, there is a great deal of money in drug interdiction. But as a New York State resident in a border/prison community I can testify that the opposition was fierce for the money and the racism reasons -- but the opposition failed. And now, they seem to have realized, the folks who lost the most money were the black market suppliers and law enforcement got to spend more time on the meth suppliers and the crack suppliers which, they identified as a win over time.
