On Wednesday, C-SPAN announced that Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) had both publicly accepted an invitation to make a joint appearance on its Ceasefire program, but a few hours later Johnson made it clear hes unwilling to show up until the government shutdown is over.
C-SPAN initially shared the news that Johnson and Jeffries would appear on Ceasefire, hosted by Politico White House Bureau Chief Dasha Burns, posting a memo that quoted from recent media appearances by both party leaders agreeing to come on the show for a debate.
C-SPAN stands ready to host this Johnson-Jeffries joint appearance, the memo stated. We look forward to providing a forum for a smart, civil, respectful exchange of ideas between both leaders. C-SPAN is currently working with both offices on scheduling.
However, a few hours later, Johnson put a big condition on his C-SPAN debate with Jeffries: Hes not willing to show up until the shutdown is over.

(94,567 posts)Every time someone asks him a question he says, "I don't know anything about that, never heard about this or that." Then he says we have to get down to more pressing issues:
No one has ever deserved that prize more, and that is an objective fact, he added.

(20,642 posts)1). Jeffries would do his homework and lay out what Americans stand to lose if the bill were signed "as is."
2). Johnson would memorize all of the latest Republican points, especially blaming Democrats.
If Jeffries lays out the truth...the cuts to Medicaid, the people whose healthcare premiums will double or triple...especially if he quotes / cites the bill itself...Johnson really can't get away with denying it, and he'd have to choose whether he's "for it" or "against it," and right now, he's just trying to pretend that it's not in there at all.
There's no way Johnson would show up prepared to address the truth of what's in that poisonous bill.
