Schumer, Clinton give Trump credit for Gaza ceasefire, hostage release
Source: The Hill
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and former President Clinton gave President Trump credit for the ceasefire in Gaza and the return of Israeli hostages by Hamas.
Today is a wonderful day. Finally, finally, finally, the last living hostages brutally held by Hamas are home, an immense and overwhelming sigh of relief, Schumer said in a statement obtained by The Hills sister network NewsNation.
I commend the enormous advocacy of the tireless hostage families, President Trump, his administration, and all who helped make this moment happen, the Senate Democratic leader added.

(3,904 posts)All of them kidnapped from Gaza and brutally held without charges in Israeli prisons some for 2 years?
Their families are rejoicing too, Senator.
Or the many thousands - doctors, nurses and innocents still held in prisons without charges and abused and starved every day. Perhaps spare a word of hope for their imminent freedom too, Senator.

(3,904 posts)And being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Other than those things, Israel couldn't come up with ANY plausible charges for the 1,700 Gazans it tortured and abused for up to two years. Thousands more remain in Israeli torture camps, also without charges.
At least 75 detainees have died in these awful places, tortured to death or dead from intentional withholding of life-saving medical treatment.
Israeli authorities must immediately comply with the 7 September Israeli High Court of Justice decision ordering the State to improve the quantity and quality of food provided to Palestinian prisoners. The court confirmed that the conditions deliberately imposed by Israeli authorities fail to meet basic nutritional standards. The decision, however, is too late to save thousands of Palestinians from ill-treatment. Furthermore, the authorities have publicly refused to comply with the order. The Israeli authorities have also reportedly attempted to conceal reports prepared by the Public Defenders Office regarding the treatment of Palestinian detainees and their conditions, citing national security concerns.
Between 7 October 2023 and 31 August 2025, at least 75 Palestinians, including a 17-year-old child, have died in Israeli detention (49 from Gaza, 24 from the West Bank and 2 Palestinian citizens of Israel), according to the UN Human Rights office in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. Israeli authorities have released information indicating the death of another 19 detainees, without sufficient details to enable the verification of their identity. In addition, at least 5 Palestinians, one of them a 16-year-old child, have died while in Israeli custody shortly after being shot by Israeli security forces, in some cases following a failure to ensure prompt medical attention after the unlawful use of lethal force.
Of the 75 deaths in detention, at least 22 detainees reportedly had health conditions requiring medical attention prior to their arrest, raising concerns that the denial of such medical care coupled with harsh detention conditions may have been calculated to contribute to their deaths. In at least 12 cases, we gathered testimonies or evidence in the form of autopsy reports that detainees died after being beaten or tortured by Israeli security forces.
We have documented the systematic torture and ill-treatment to which Israel has subjected Palestinian prisoners, including repeated beatings, waterboarding, stress positions, the use of rape and other sexual and gender-based violence and the imposition of deliberately inhumane conditions such as starvation and the denial of clean clothes, hygiene necessities and medical care.

And UN credibility is close to zero.
And my usual disclaimer, yes, I believe that Netanyahu and his government are horrible disgusting human beings.

(3,904 posts)Is it because they're Palestinian? After all, they weren't charged with any crime.
For you, it seems no group of Palestinians can be without bad actors. What does that indicate, wonder if you've given that any thought?
For you also, I imagine Amnesty and HRW are also low cred. Too bad, they have some reports out too on the abuse of Palestinian prisoners and the war crimes of Israel. I don't imagine you'll be reading those either.
That Netanyahu et al are horrible and disgusting is not saying much. Now if you were to suddenly acknowledge that Israel is committing genocide and intentionally starving people in order to get them to leave their homeland so Israeli settlers can take over Gaza - and that's been the plan all along - I'd give you a hat tip at the very least.

A Trump economic development plan to rebuild and energise Gaza will be created by convening a panel of experts who have helped birth some of the thriving modern miracle cities in the Middle East. Many thoughtful investment proposals and exciting development ideas have been crafted by well-meaning international groups, and will be considered to synthesize the security and governance frameworks to attract and facilitate these investments that will create jobs, opportunity, and hope for future Gaza.

Meanwhile, someone needs to check out Clinton for dementia.

If we Democrats are to get out of the wilderness, we need new leaders who are in touch with today.

(28,527 posts)No matter how close to reality - it just looks silly to try to credit the previous administration in mid October. And trying to ignore the biggest story of the day isn't likely to work either.
A tepid congratulations and waiting for it to all fall apart is likely the best strategy.

(4,745 posts)I get the part he is Jewish and, as we all should, celebrates the release of the hostages and a decrease in hostilities but you don't have to pump Trump at the same time. That will come back in a 2026 political ad for the GOP. Please, please...play smart politics if you want to stay in the game!

Will there be a lasting peace? I doubt it because the chief impediment is that the Palestinians refuse to accept the continued existence of Israel.
