Former President Barack Obama slammed President Donald Trump for sending the National Guard to Chicago to crack down on crime, saying it is inherently corrupting for a president to use the military against their own people. Obama voiced his displeasure with Trump on the final episode of Marc Marons WTF podcast, which released on Monday. The ex-president added he believed Trump has weakened democracy during the first year of his second term.
When you have military that can direct force against their own people, that is inherently corrupting. And so when you now start seeing the politicization of the military deliberately, right Obama said. They just landed in Chicago! Maron jumped in to add. Obama continued denouncing Trump right after.
When you have what looks like a deliberate end run around not just a concept but a law thats been around for a long time, Posse Comitatus, that says you dont use our military on domestic soil unless there is an extraordinary emergency of some sort; that when you see an administration suggest that ordinary street crime is an insurrection or Obama said. A terrorist attack, Maron chimed in. A terrorist attack, Obama continued, That is a genuine effort to weaken how we have understood democracy.
Obamas comments come after President Trump sent 200 National Guard troops from Texas to Chicago last week.

(3,066 posts)There is no insurrection, no terrorist attack, no foreign invasion.
This is Trump lawlessly using the military against the American people; its political theater, Trump pandering to his partisan base at the expense of democracy.

(21,771 posts)He and Michelle are from Chicago (so what if he didn't actually grow up there; it's his hometown now), so I'm sure this is hitting home personally for them. I'm so glad he is speaking out about this in such a direct and forceful way.

(21,771 posts)Thanks for pointing that out. I almost included it in my post, but decided to leave it out to cut down on the verbiage a little. But it's an important indication of how strong his ties to Chicago are, and I know Chicago feels a strong connection to him.
It looks like the library is really coming along! I'm really looking forward to visiting once it's done and open to the public.
