Republicans, playing defense on health care, uncertain of path forward

Source: The Hill

Republicans are on the defensive as Democrats have successfully made the shutdown fight about health care. Most Republicans said they don’t want to see insurance premiums spike, but neither are they willing to openly support the extension of the enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits Democrats are asking for.

While the GOP has remained united in refusing to even entertain the idea of an extension in the context of ending the shutdown, Republicans don’t appear to have an alternate plan for what happens next.

“We’re open to a lot of different things. And the president wants to make health care work for everybody too. Once we reopen, then we’ll be open to have good conversations, productive conversations,” Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.) said. Asked if those conversations will be about extending the tax credits, Mullin demurred. “I mean, there’s a lot of options there. I’m not saying that’s not a possibility, just not one we’ve really discussed,” he said.

Democrats are feeling increasingly emboldened about their position and have made it clear they do not intend to back off their health care funding demands. If Congress doesn’t act in the next three weeks, Americans across the country will see major increases in their insurance premiums when open enrollment begins in November.

They’re the ones who are in the majority.

They shouldn’t shut down government just to let insurance costs rise.

And it’s been decades. Proving, yet again, that Republicans are absolutely unequipped to govern anything. The definition of ‘good for nothing’

BS. If the nazi party wanted to make healthcare work for everybody, they'd pass universal heathcare.

Not as catchy as “Dems in disarray,” but it still has a nice ring to it.

Wimpy (from the Popeye comic strip)

He was the embodiment of charming freeloaders—soft-spoken, educated, and perpetually broke, yet somehow always angling for a burger.

The phrase has since become shorthand for delayed promises, especially when someone’s trying to dodge payment or commitment with a smile.

He could become the Democrats response to the GOP scheme.

If they're willing to negotiate then, then they should be willing to negotiate now.

There is problem with healthcare that need to be addressed.

We need a system that does not depend on the goodwill of health insurers.

But for now, the ACA subsidies should be addressed.

It is telling that the people in charge: Rep. Mike Johnson and Sen. John Thune supported Trump's repeal of ACA in 2017 when Trump occupied the White House in his first term.
