Johnson describes planned No Kings rally as 'hate America,' 'pro-Hamas' gathering

Speaker Mike Johnson on Friday slammed the No Kings protest march scheduled to take place at the National Mall next week, describing the planned protest as the hate America rally that would draw the pro-Hamas wing and the antifa people. His characterizations, however, drew condemnation from some Democrats who defended the protest movement, whose first big demonstration was overwhelmingly peaceful.
Theyre all coming out, Johnson said Friday in an interview on Fox News. Some of the House Democrats are selling t-shirts for the event. And its being told to us that they wont be able to reopen the government until after that rally because they cant face their rabid base. Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Minn.), another senior House Republican, also criticized the planned demonstration and blamed it for prolonging the shutdown. Telling reporters Democrats had caved to the terrorist wing of their party, Emmer alluded to a hate America rally in D.C. next week.
The No Kings movement first sprang up as counter-programming to a military parade spearheaded by the White House in June, leading to the largest coordinated demonstration against Trump to date since his return to the Oval Office. The protests were overwhelmingly peaceful, and organizers at the time said they specifically did not plan an event in Washington to avoid a conflict. The coast-to-coast protests went on almost entirely without incident, with one notable act of violence when rally peacekeepers in Salt Lake City shot and killed a bystander because they believed another man with a gun was about to fire on the crowd.
The organizers of the upcoming rally largely brushed off House GOP leaders characterization. In a joint, unsigned statement, which they said they issued after a few moments of laughter, they pressured Johnson over the government shutdown. Speaker Johnson is running out of excuses for keeping the government shut down, the No Kings coalition wrote.

More on where Johnson's fundamentalist bullshit comes from.

The Key to Mike Johnsons Christian Extremism Hangs Outside His Office
...In the mid-2000s, these NAR [New Apostolic Reformation, as if Jesus' apostles got it all wrong] networks collectively embraced a theological paradigm called the Seven Mountain Mandate, a prophecy that divides society into seven arenas religion, family, government, education, arts and entertainment, media, and business. The Mandate, as they understand it, is given by God for Christians to take dominion and conquer the tops of all seven of these sectors and have Christian influence flow down into the rest of society.
Drawn into American politics by this aggressive theological vision, many New Apostolic Reformation leaders became very active in right-wing political circles, including one of Wagners key disciples, an apostle-prophet named Dutch Sheets.
Sheets is not a household name in Christian politics like Jerry Falwell or Ralph Reed or James Dobson, but he has real influence. Sheets has written more than 18 popular evangelical books, and his Intercessory Prayer has sold more than a million copies. He was an endorser and faith adviser to Newt Gingrinchs short-lived candidacy for president in 2012, and he openly espoused the lie that Barack Obama was secretly a Muslim.
In 2013, Sheets was given an Appeal to Heaven flag by a friend who told him that, because it predated the Stars and Stripes, it was the flag that had flown over our nation at its birthing. Sheets describes this experience as revelatory, and he seized upon the flag as a symbol of the spiritual-warfare driven Christian nationalist revolution he hoped to see in American politics. In 2015, he published a book titled An Appeal to Heaven and rolled out a systematic campaign to propagate this symbol in right-wing Christian circles. That same year Sarah Palin wrote an opinion piece in Breitbart, endorsing the Appeal to Heaven campaign and thanking her [s]pecial friends, Pastor Dutch and Ceci Sheets, who had given her the flag....

(22,080 posts)Such a huge difference between people protesting and people rioting.
I watched the attack on the Capital from beginning to end, saw the line of uniformed people snake through the crowd, one hand on the shoulder of the person ahead, all the way up the steps, where they divided, one snake to the left, one to the right.
I've attended 3 No Kings protests, and a leader tells us not to engage with people trying to disrupt the protest, urge us to remain peaceful, urge us to contact elected officials about our concerns.
And I've seen the pictures and videos from so many protests this year, that are only violent because i.c.e. thugs are assaulting unarmed civilians in street clothes, causing harm and injury.
mike can not only go to Hell for his lies. He IS going to hell.

It's tough being in the minority, which you are. Who's the America haters? Go look in the mirror, Republicans! You are the America haters, what with going against your oaths of office, stomping on the Constitution. WTF does Hamas have to do with anything? This is an anti-Trump protest. As far as antifa itself? I guess what you are counting on is your base not understanding what "antifa" means. They don't know what it means, but since you call the opposition "antifa", they think has got to mean some nasty thing. HaHaha.

(171,158 posts)GOP leaders appear so concerned about a scheduled protest that they're falsely labeling a No Kings gathering as a hate-America rally.
The more Republican rhetoric about No Kings events turns hysterical, the easier it is to believe that the party is increasingly worried about the growing public backlash to the GOP agenda. www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddo...

But when it comes to GOP attitudes related to Americans and their right to public dissent, the problem isnt limited to the man in the Oval Office. Politico reported late last week:
Speaker Mike Johnson on Friday slammed the No Kings protest march scheduled to take place at the National Mall [on Oct. 18], describing the planned protest as the hate America rally that would draw the pro-Hamas wing and the antifa people. His characterizations, however, drew condemnation from some Democrats who defended the protest movement, whose first big demonstration was overwhelmingly peaceful.
Hours after the Louisiana Republican made those comments on Fox News, he doubled down on the rhetoric during comments to reporters on Capitol Hill, referring to No Kings gathering as a hate-America rally.
Johnson had plenty of company. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer on Friday also told reporters that the scheduled protest should be seen as a hate-America rally, adding that the gathering is being championed by the terrorist wing of the Democratic Party......
Last month, Trump designated antifa as a major terrorist organization, notwithstanding the fact there is no such organization, and we soon after discussed an unsettling dynamic: If the White House says that antifa members are terrorists, and the White House says it will decide on its own who and what qualifies as antifa affiliates, this can get very scary, very quickly.
Weeks later, GOP leaders started telling Americans that a peaceful demonstration by Americans will draw the antifa people, and that the terrorist wing of the Democratic Party is involved in the gathering.
There have already been too many recent instances in which those in positions of power have tried to stifle dissent. Theres no reason to believe, however, that things wont get worse.
