Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) made clear Democrats are not backing down from their health care demands, as the U.S. government enters its second week of a shutdown.
In a heavily produced video posted to social platform X, the Democratic leader blamed his opponents for the shutdown and outlined the reasons his party is insisting on a deal to extend the Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies which are set to expire at the end of the year, resulting in rising insurance premiums before they support the GOP proposal to reopen the government.
So now were a government shutdown. And you may be asking yourself, How the hell did we get here? Schumer said in the opening of the video, which was posted Tuesday evening.
Donald Trump and the Republican Party are hellbent on taking health care away from 16 million people closing community clinics, rural hospitals, nursing homes all so they can keep giving tax breaks to their billionaire friends. Its a disgrace, he continued. So Democrats have three words for this: No f‑‑‑ing way, Schumer said. Its literally life or death. We will not let Republicans blow up our health care system.

(10,736 posts)The Republicans can reopen the government tomorrow if they wanted to.
All they got to do is either a) negotiate and do a deal with Schumer and the Democrats. Or b) nuke the filibuster rule.
Democrats had tried to nuke the filibuster in the past yet certain senators said "no". Those senators are no longer senators BTW. Do the Republicans not have the votes to get rid of the filibuster on their side? Or maybe they see an advantage in spinning the reason for shutdown and blaming Democrats and also want to threaten some other more cruel things too?
I urge Schumer and company to please hold strong. I see this as Republican bullying in order to "own the libs" in part and also to keep the filibuster so that when they're in the minority again this "tradition" of 60 votes will hold and they can get more leverage as a minority party in a few years time with a filibuster in place rather than just nuking it and being left in the cold when they become the minority again.

(21,031 posts)I'm not buying Donnie's swing towards Ukraine recently. Too much kompromat in too many Kremlin files. Coupled with Epstein, it would be more than a little embarrassing for a lot of Republicans. Perhaps criminal.

(21,031 posts)If someone loses their ACA plan and gets rushed to the hospital, they're still going to get treated. But the cost of that treatment doesn't vanish. It will get passed along as much higher insurance costs for the rest of us. That's not even counting the impact on rural hospitals. Many will simply have to close. Though I live in rural New England, I'm still within easy driving distance of a research and teaching hospital. It will be impacted, certainly, but not closed. Same for much of Blue America, and those close to major cities. Healthcare will be much more expensive, but it will still be there. In ruby red, Bum Fuck Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, et al., it's a whole other story. The nearest treatment facility may be hours away if Repukes get their way. Another case of magats stupidly screwing themselves.
At it's heart, this is Repukes trying to kill the ACA through the backdoor, because they know trying that again through the front door would be a disaster for them.

I'm glad Schumer and Jeffries are holding the line (and starting to get really pissed off at these watered down offers )"Extend ACA for one year" - sure, but the billionaire welfare is permanent. I don't think so.
