I Actually Didn't Even Know That:Kaitlan Collins Leaves Jim Jordan at a Loss to Explain Why GOP Hasn't Sworn in Democrat

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) tried to explain why a Democrat elected to Congress last month hasnt been sworn in, only to have CNNs Kaitlan Collins immediately shoot down the attempt. Rep.-Elect Adelita Grijalva (D-AZ) won the special election in Arizonas seventh congressional district two weeks ago, succeeding her late father, Raul Grijalva. However, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has so far refused to swear her in.
On Tuesday, Johnson was asked by a reporter if the delay is because Grijalvas vote would be the 218th vote in favor of a measure that would force the Department of Justice to release its files on Jeffrey Epstein. The Trump administration initially indicated it would release those files, but backtracked amid reporting that Attorney General Pam Bondi told President Donald Trump his name is in the files. Johnson ducked the question with a procedural explanation amid the ongoing government shutdown. Were in a pro forma session because there is nothing for the House to do, the speaker said. The House has done its job.
Hours later on CNNs The Source, Jordan offered the same explanation, which was promptly blown up. Is it clear to you why Speaker Johnson has not sworn in the new member, Adelita Grijalva, yet? Collins asked. Because theyre not in session, Jordan replied. Its typically done when were all there. Its a special thing. The individual gives, the new member gives a speech in front of Congress, sworn in by the Speaker of the House, introduced by colleagues from their delegation. Jordan went on to say, Its always been done that way. Collins seemed prepared for Jordans explanation:
COLLINS: So, youre saying because its a pro forma session. Thats why?
JORDAN: Yeah, because theres like, theres two people on the floor, you know, whatever. Theres but normally its done in front of the full House. That new member in a special election gets, I think in some ways a kind of a neat experience where they get to talk to the House, their first day getting sworn in. And thats happened every single time that I can recall with any new member elected in a special [election] in the middle of a congressional session.
COLLINS: But a couple months ago, he swore in Jimmy Patronis and Randy Fine in a pro forma session.

(21,756 posts)The pretense is very tiresome, although it did result in this amusing exchange.
I'm sure Jordan knew the real reason Grijalva hasn't been sworn in, but I think probably also believed what he was saying about new House members never being sworn in during a pro forma session. He seemed to be caught flat-footed when Collins pointed out the two recent exceptions, and his reaction was pretty darned funny!

(3,993 posts)can make one to the USSC and we'll see what the USSC does about it. Any defense could be that the Rs were denying 800,000 citizens in her district in AZ the right to representation. Expose them all!

(121 posts)Said Johnson, Theres nothing to do,
The chamber is empty, its true.
But Grijalvas not sworn,
Though her seats duly worn
Seems her vote might expose quite a few.
Jim Jordan stepped up to explain,
With a line that was shaky and plain.
Its tradition, he cried,
But the facts just denied
And Collins was swift to detain.
Kaitlan Collins, with poise and with sass,
Called out the evasion with class.
Then why, she inquired,
Were two others just hired
In pro forma? That doesnt quite pass.
They claim its just House protocol,
But whispers say thats not it at all.
For Epsteins sealed file
Could stretch half a mile
And Grijalvas vote might make it fall.
Its special, said Jordan, you see,
A new member should get to feel free.
With speeches and flair,
A crowd that is there!
But two swore in with no marquee.
Two-eighteens a number they dread,
If Grijalva is finally led.
It could crack the disguise
That conceals certain ties
To secrets theyd rather stay dead.
So here we are stuck in a game,
Where excuses are always the same.
But Kaitlan was sharp,
She punctured the harp
And left Jordan retreating in shame.

(40,300 posts)The Speaker or Speaker Pro Tempore must swear in members who miss the mass swearing-in ceremony on the first day afterward; on rare occasions, the House has authorized other Members or local judges to swear-in absent Representatives.
