U.S. government shuts down as Trump and Congress fail to reach a funding deal
Source: NBC
The U.S. government officially shut down at midnight after Congress and the White House failed to reach an agreement on how to extend federal funding.
President Donald Trumps Republican Party controls both chambers of Congress, but it needs Democratic support to pass a bill in the Senate, where 60 votes are required. And the two parties failed to craft a bipartisan bill, with the Senate rejecting both a GOP proposal and a Democratic proposal just hours before the shutdown deadline.
Its the first government shutdown since 2018, in Trumps first term, which was the longest ever at 34 days, lasting into early 2019. There is no clear path to a resolution, with the two sides fundamentally at odds over how to resolve the impasse. Federal employees will go without pay for the duration of a shutdown, while members of Congress and Trump will still receive their salaries. About 750,000 employees will be furloughed each day, the Congressional Budget Office said, while others who work essential jobs, like Transportation Security Administration agents, air traffic controllers, federal law enforcement officers and members of the military, will be forced to work without pay.
Under federal law, they are all scheduled to receive back pay once the government reopens, even for the time some didnt work. Compensation for furloughed workers will cost taxpayers $400 million, according to the CBO.

(20,547 posts)think about that. That is fucked up. Instead of protecting Americans, he is terrorizing them.
Same for military present and now training in mostly blue cities. He's terrorizing Americans.
Taking away essentials cross the country but expect We the People to keep paying taxes, et al.,
Enough.

He's always going to have it both ways ... and he'll never accept responsibility for anything.

(1,313 posts)of why, if the government is shut down, the President of that shut down government still has any power over, what is not, an open government. In short, why isn't he shut down too?

(1,109 posts)requirements to work without pay do not leave one powerless.
(and the ethics of those requirements, especially when those with the most power in Government are still paid, are nauseating).
