Sept 30 (Reuters) - A federal judge in Rhode Island on Tuesday temporarily blocked the Trump administration from cutting $233 million in counterterrorism grants funds for Democratic-led states, including New York and Illinois.
Eleven states sued the Trump administration on Monday over last-minutes changes to counterterrorism grants, saying that Republican President Donald Trump was retaliating against Democratic-led states by redirecting funding away from them just as the fiscal year ends.
The states said they needed a next-day restraining order, or else the funds would expire before they had a chance to challenge Trump's action in court.
U.S. District Judge Mary S. McElroy agreed, saying that the funds had been cut in a "slapdash" manner.

(6,588 posts)Are they going to lay down for this too?
And does Trump want Blue States to be hit by terrorists?
He is getting more demented by the day.

(57,605 posts)military training, refuse funds for our defense, refuse funds for disasters, refuse funds for infrastructure, why the hell am I paying Federal taxes?
Somehow we need to figure a way to catch and redeploy those funds.

(754 posts)This would never stand up in court, but it would be nice if a state could establish an escrow fund that residents and companies could opt to pay their federal payroll and income taxes into. The state could then pay the feds what is owed from that fund in lieu of the residents and companies themselves. I'm sure there are all kinds of reasons why a state could justify doing this. I'm not saying that the state should refuse to go ahead and promptly pay these taxes to the feds, but it could. Because it would be an opt-in fund no-one would be compelled to pay into it if they'd rather pay the feds directly.
