Ozzy Osbourne, prince of darkness who rose to fame with Black Sabbath, dies aged 76

Source: The Independent

Tuesday 22 July 2025 14:11 EDT

The “Prince of Darkness”, Ozzy Osbourne, who shocked and awed with his heavy metal band Black Sabbath, has died aged 76.

News of his death was announced by his family.

For many years, fans felt that Osbourne must be indestructible. The “Godfather of Metal” had survived decades of hard-living, including drug and alcohol abuse, along with controversies such as the notorious moment he bit the head off a bat during a live concert in Des Moines, IA.

In his later life, however, he was a reformed wildman who suffered a string of health issues, mostly related to neck injuries sustained in a 2003 quad-biking accident, which were later exacerbated by a fall in 2019. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease that same year, and also endured a bout of Covid.

Osbourne performed final gig with Black Sabbath this month

Ozzy Osbourne, also known as the Prince of Darkness, performed his final concert with Black Sabbath for the first time in 20 years on 5 July.

The band's final gig was hosted at Villa Park [Birmingham's biggest football stadium - ed.)]in Aston, Birmingham, where Osbourne hails from.
...
The band performed a string of their hits for 40,000 people in the stadium and millions on a livestream. They were joined on stage by a string of rock royalty, including Billy Corgan, Steven Tyler, Tom Morello, Ronnie Wood and Yungblud.

Their final performance raised £140m for charity, according to the event's musical director Tom Morello.

The founding members of Black Sabbath were awarded the Freedom of the City of Birmingham at a ceremony in the Council House on Saturday.

At the ceremony, the original band members of Terence “Geezer” Butler, Tony Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne, and Bill Ward were presented with their Freedom of the City scrolls and medals by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, Councillor Zafar Iqbal.

The Freedom of the City honour is the one of the oldest traditional ceremonies in the country and recognises people’s exceptional service to the city.

This honour recognises Black Sabbath’s significance to the cultural and musical identity of Birmingham, their strong association with the city and continued influence as pioneers of heavy metal in both Birmingham and beyond.

He's been a consistent social media presence for 20 years. Sabbath just played a farewell concert that was widely promoted.

I think you're just taking a shot for a reason I cannot fathom. Ozzy was a good guy.

RIP Blizzard of Oz

Baby
I get so scared inside, and I don't really understand
Is it love that's on my mind, or is it fantasy?
Heaven
Is in the palm of my hand, and it's waiting here for you
What am I supposed to do with a childhood tragedy?

If I close my eyes forever
Will it all remain unchanged?
If I close my eyes forever
Will it all remain the same?

Sometimes
It's hard to hold on
So hard to hold on to my dreams
It isn't always what it seems
When you're face to face with me

You're like a dagger
And stick me in the heart
And taste the blood from my blade
And when we sleep, would you shelter me
In your warm and darkened grave?

If I close my eyes forever
Will it all remain unchanged?
If I close my eyes forever
Will it all remain the same?

Will you ever take me?
No, I just can't take the pain
But would you ever trust me?
No, I'll never feel the same, Oh

I know I've been so hard on you
I know I've told you lies
If I could have just one more wish
I'd wipe the cobwebs from my eyes

If I close my eyes forever
Will it all remain unchanged?
If I close my eyes forever
Will it all remain the same?

Close your eyes
Close your eyes
You gotta close your eyes for me

I'm sorry for the loss. I've never been in to that type of music, but I got to "know" him through the reality show for a bit, and I admired his strength and character.

My sympathies to the family, friends and fans.

As a man he was an absolute wreck, but he must have been made out of something special. Maybe Iron Man was written as a description of him. It's almost incomprehensible he lived to 76 (and some of his later years were even borderline lucid) given everything he ingested.

I've been a fan of Black Sabbath and Ozzy since I was 10 years old. A warm, caring, funny and somewhat flawed man helped bring us some of the most iconic Heavy Metal music ever produced. As a solo artist he showcased some of the greatest guitar players we've ever heard, like Randy Rhodes, Jake E. Lee and Zakk Wylde. He will be greatly missed.

I feel that rush of energy and youth come surging back. Not completely positive feeling I'll admit. There are streaks of despair and fear among the almost euphoric energy. But I feel alive in the way that true artists can inspire. So thanks for the memories now and then, Ozzy. RIP, my fellow traveler.
