House gives final approval to Trump's $9 billion cut to public broadcasting and foreign aid

Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House gave final approval to President Donald Trump’s request to claw back about $9 billion for public broadcasting and foreign aid early Friday as Republicans intensified their efforts to target institutions and programs they view as bloated or out of step with their agenda.

The vote marked the first time in decades that a president has successfully submitted such a rescissions request to Congress, and the White House suggested it won’t be the last. Some Republicans were uncomfortable with the cuts, yet supported them anyway, wary of crossing Trump or upsetting his agenda.

The House passed the bill by a vote of 216-213. It now goes to Trump for his signature.

“We need to get back to fiscal sanity and this is an important step,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La.

The official roll call vote should be available soon at https://clerk.house.gov/Votes

I was watching the proceedings live on C-SPAN. From my memory maybe two Republicans voted "no".

practically RAISED on PBS back then, I had such an optimistic view of America as a country that valued intellectualism. But geez, the last 10-15 years shattered that viewpoint drip drip drip.

No longer can I believe the POSOTUS is just a minor mistake. He and his allied knuckle draggers in Congress like Taylor Greene, Jim Banks, Bernie Moreno, Randy Fine, etc. are a direct freaking reflection of our country's character.

I don't know if they do it just to be dicks, or to "own" the liberals/non-Trumpians.

PBS and NPR show themselves to be assets to American life.

Those in rural communities....NO MORE Sesame Street, Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood, Masterpiece, Antiques Road Show, Masterpiece Mysteries, Ken Burns documentary series, PBS News Hour, and more.

Their actions show they don’t value high culture, preferring Facebook slop.

...rather than our local station (WETA). WETA will be fine with no federal funding (~3% of their budget), but many smaller PBS stations won't. Donating to PBS directly will enable them to help the stations that have a bigger reliance on federal funds.
