Trump Admin Sues California Over Soaring Egg Prices

Source: Newsweek

Published Jul 10, 2025 at 6:24 AM EDT

The Trump administration has sued California over its animal cruelty laws, saying the state's regulation of chicken farms has led to high egg prices across the country. Lowering the cost of eggs, which spiked in recent years as an avian flu outbreak ravaged American flocks, was one of President Donald Trump's key campaign promises in the lead-up to the 2024 election.

But almost six months into his second mandate, his administration has struggled to keep the cost of the staple down. The administration now says California's regulations create "unnecessary red tape" in the production of eggs and are responsible for stubbornly high prices.

The lawsuit is the latest flash point in the ongoing battle between the U.S. president and the Democratic-led state, which has clashed with the Trump administration over its aggressive immigration policies and transgender rights.

"Trump's back to his favorite hobby: blaming California for literally everything," the office of California Governor Gavin Newsom wrote on X, formerly Twitter, about the lawsuit. "Next up: @CAGovernor Gavin Newsom caused the fall of Rome and sent the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs!"

(NEWSFLASH: I get ZERO eggs from the state of California and the price of a dozen at my closest supermarket here in Philly - an Acme, which is not a specialty or "organic" store but a 134 year old chain that started in Philly, and is now owned by Albertsons, is STILL over THREE TIMES the normal price - I paid $4.99/dozen the last time I bought them a couple weeks ago, which is off the high of about $6.99/dozen a few months ago, and where last summer, with a digital coupon, I paid $4.99 for a "family size" of 30 eggs)

JUST IN: The Trump administration is suing to overturn CA state laws intended to prevent cruelty against egg-laying chickens.

The administration says these laws have driven up egg prices and are preempted by a 1970 federal law. https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.cacd.978076/gov.uscourts.cacd.978076.1.0.pdf

Keep everyone tied up in court for years and bankrupt them with legal bills.

Trump’s attorneys are paid for by the US taxpayer.

as if California is raising egg prices in other states.

Of course some stores are still $6.
Chickens have a quick replacement rate.

Now chump wants to inflict suffering on chickens.
Overloaded cages living in filth

Of course chumps eggs are the best McDonald's has.

The peaked around 8 dollars and are now under 3 (national average).

In California, cage-free eggs are mandated which is why they're more expensive.

allow Avian flu to run uncontrolled through poultry houses--killing every bird in sight, rather than take ANY steps to control it. Yeah, eggs will be fruitful, massively available, and cheap then. (Of course we will be in the midst of another pandemic, so few might notice--and his brain dead little moron has already stopped the final clearance studies and production of the mRNA H5N1 avian flu vaccine, so we'll all be complaining from the gravesite).

(although probably true outside of those establishments that use them in restaurants, bakeries, hospitality, misc. food manufacturing, etc.)

But like the price of gasoline, it became a major RW talking point and campaign issue against Biden, where the media allowed that to happen, and now here we are with this CYA move that is apparently bothering 45 and the GOP. And possibly because the suppliers were called out and supposedly being "investigated" back in March with respect to possible gouging, and the industry yawned.

His flock are so gullible and so deep into the cult, that they will simply absorb what he says as truth.
1. Dear Leader says egg prices will go down
2. Egg prices do not go down. Even rise
3. Trump tells them that the reason prices are so high all over the country, even in Red States, is because one of the Blue States imposes woke regulations and rules on industry.

Wouldn't producers from non-regulation states simply undercut their prices and thereby bring all the prices down?

I'm in CA, so they *should* be lower.

But at Grocery Outlet, which is supposed to be cheaper, they were over $8/doz last time I was there...!

Maybe they should consider that need for culling millions of chickens around the whole country due to Bird Flu? But that would be too rational for them. Besides, I'm sure another wave of Avian Flu will be on us in no time!

$3.20 approx per dozen that I usually paid last year.

So this is just terrorism and an attack on California and Newsom by the orange Hitler administration which I suspect Steven Miller is behind.

I put them in plastic bags to keep in humidity, keep the fridge at 35 degrees (it's not often opened--it's just me and I have a small 'drink fridge' for tap water, carbonated water, and beer), and the ones I used this morning for breakfast were perfectly fine ... and purchased last winter break, so over 6 months ago. I'm running low. Finally.

Today I got another 5 dozen to get me to 1/2/26, presumably. $13.22. $2.64/dozen. Last winter they were $18.xx. At my usual store they're 3.09/dozen, 4.70/18 ct, noticed because they're close to the milk and the 18-ct grade A large white eggs had a sign, limit 4 per customer. (Really? That's 6 dozen.)

It's local. There's a reason. Wonder what it is.
