Trump administration is months away from direct payments to farmers, agriculture secretary says

April 3 (Reuters) - U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said on Fox News on Thursday the Trump administration is "months away" from making a decision about whether to make payments to farmers to offset any impact from tariffs.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced sweeping tariffs that were mostly criticized by farm and food groups for their potential to shrink markets for farmers and raise prices for consumers.

Rollins has said the administration would consider making payments to farmers in the case of any economic hit from tariffs. "We are months, literally months away, from understanding if that’s going to be necessary," Rollins said. During his first administration, Trump paid billions to farmers to offset losses from a trade war with China.

Rollins has said she has spoken with Trump's first-term Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue about mirroring the approach in Trump's second term. Speaking to reporters at the White House on Thursday, Rollins said Trump remains committed to farmers but farmers and ranchers "understand that there may be a short time of uncertainty."

This is NOT like the first term when the tariffs were only on China. This is on pretty much "everyone" we trade with and they have already started to retaliate, so the "bribe" money would have to cover a very broad range of products (versus during the first term tariffs that hit the soy farmers the hardest).

Instead of the tax cuts for the wealthy, they should tax them and give the money to people for food.

The fucker is a poor businessman and has always been. Subsidies to farmers because his tariffs lost their markets is not good.

Trade associations have worked hard to develop foreign markets for US agricultural goods.

All their work.....poof.

It's not coming back overnight, if ever.

We have stiff competition worldwide already.

If I were China South America would be looking pretty good at this point........hey, wait......aren't they investing heavily in SA already?

That POS has no problem spending billions of tax payer $$$ helping farmers after HE fucks them over. Seeing how probably 95% of them vote for Trump, they should just EAT IT.

That's his MO, inflict cruel punishment, and then get praise for withdrawing it. I'm glad to hear it will take time to rescind the cuts. Let farmers who voted for Trump suffer a bit longer, maybe go bankrupt in the meantime.

But, that's only part of the problem. The destruction of USAID, support for food banks, and other food based programs are still costing farmers billions.

Agree with others here, and have been on this for many years (admittedly cautiously as I'm literally surrounded by them). It's just fu#king ridiculous that farmers are guarantied a certain lifestyle by my tax dollars, while simultaneously (the hypocrisy point here) voting to take away any 'help' for all others.

Embrace the suck. The 'big beautiful tariffs' will make us all rich. Just like during the late 1800's and early 1900's because the world and economics are the same. Just like my dog who checks the storm drain every single day because he saw a cat there once weeks ago.
