Overflow Omaha crowd launches U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders' 'Fighting Oligarchy' tour

Source: Nebraska Examiner

‘We are living in two Americas,’ says the Vermont senator and former presidential candidate

By: Jamie Reiff - February 22, 2025 1:28 am

OMAHA – U.S. Sen Bernie Sanders kicked off his “Fighting Oligarchy” nationwide tour in Omaha Friday night, drawing an overflow crowd of more than 2,500 with hundreds more turned away.

The progressive independent from Vermont spoke to supporters about what he said is division in the United States under the leadership of President Donald Trump and billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency.

Sanders said he chose Omaha as his first tour stop because of its working-class voters who were swayed toward Republican candidates in the 2024 election. The former presidential candidate said he wants to encourage people, similar to those living in the Omaha-based 2nd Congressional District, to recognize policies that could hurt them and their livelihoods.

He said that 60% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck while rich people are receiving tax cuts.

Bernie didn't have to do this. But he did. Why? I believe it is called extreme patriotism. Why we never listened to Bernie in the past is beyond me and many others. Just imagine what this country would look like today if we would have elected him in 2016. Medicare for all would be the law of the land by now. All student debt would be gone. Citizens United would be toast. And I could care less if he was an independent running as a democrat. His policies were and are still quite popular. That's what I voted for then, and that's what I'll vote for tomorrow. The good news is we now have some progressive democrats that have a future in the party. I wish them well. I hope the party gets behind them to end this farce once and for all.

Yet, all I've heard lately is crickets from the left. WTF is going on here?

The same old same old, has now been tried many times with a result of multiple failures. Something has to change. And it has to be soon. We're wasting valuable time.

The loon, and his moronic admin staff, plus the billionaire idiots are out of control.

Back in 2016 someone I know who voted for Trump said he would have voted for Bernie Sanders if he was the Democratic nominee. I"m not trying to re-litigate the 2026 primary. Setting aside the fact that Trump's policies are diametrically opposite Bernie's, the anecdote I mentioned shows a lot of voters can be influenced by a "populist" they can believe is on their side.

Whether or not a President Sanders could have gotten a progressive agenda with universal health care and free college education through the House and Senate is another matter.

and we would have never had to deal with the likes of 45/47. I just marvel at the opportunity costs we've had to endure because we didn't elect Bernie in '16.

Yes, a woman needs to be President and I was hopeful for a few candidates but obviously, the most qualified candidate (ever) white woman and an educated qualified Vice President black/Indian woman wasn't picked (or was she?) so, let's get another Democratic socialist who is in their late 30s early 40s that can connect with people their age. We need a revolution of political change especially for their future. I'm old. I won't be living those years like they are right smack in the middle of their life; now is the time to make significant and history making change.

We must end Gerrymandering, Citizen's United, closed primaries, expand the Supreme Court, mail in voting for everyone, healthcare for all damn it. People are dying, women are dying in slave states like Texas for having a medical emergency that requires them to go septic before life saving treatment is given. Those doctors are freaking cowards for not giving those women healthcare to save their lives.

But listen, it's not just women that need healthcare, there are children, the disabled, and their mental health care is desperately needed since Reagan closed the hospitals during his term. (fuck him by the way). The homeless want their dignity back. Everyone needs a roof over their head and food to survive and thrive. We are humans but we're acting like savages toward one another.

We need a revolution and my heart hopes it's the quietest revolution ever. I do not want to see anymore blood loss.

We are just about to get kicked in the stomach, again.

I only wish that my friends, and neighbors, will understand why this is happening.

I think that a whole lot of people in the Miami Valley are ready for the truth.

The GOP is not an instrument of governance.

It is a mafia.

A party funded by sociopaths led by psychopaths.

And, they will never care for southern Ohio, or anyplace else.

Med's, Ed's, and Fed's is what's left of our economy.

They are only happy when they have oil, and slaves, and stupid females.

message. It's the real us (regular folks) vs them (ultra rich) populism.

This is why the Rs lean so hard into culture wars stuff. They know if Bernie's message gets through, the jig is up for the GOP and it's robber baron financial backers.

Pres. Biden was wonderful, but maybe Bernie should be given a chance to run, especially after what we are seeing w/ tRUMP and pres. Muskrat.

I've aleady had enough of tRUMP's revenge-filled temper tantrums since he's been in office, firing people right and left, wrongly firing the wrong people (twice!), and literally taking a blowtorch to the entire federal workforce, willy nilly, with no plan (very obvious) as to what he's even doing. Muskrat isn't helping one bit either. He's a spoiled billionaire who's only looking at one thing, saving his precious billions and 'X'. Laws that have seemingly put some spending in place are run over w/ no regard to the consequences. Spending is being stopped for no legal reason or rationale at all, when there is a legal reason for quite a bit of this spending.

Billionaires have had their pieces of pie thus far for way too long here in America, where favorable tax codes have enabled these thugs to get by w/ literally paying no taxes literally forever. These people aren't Americans. They are flat out crooks, robbing the rest of us blind as the new robber barons of today's America.

Where are Americans that are standing in tRUMP's orbit, are they all 'cowed' and fearful? They are, I thought too, Americans? Why aren't they saying anything? I've seen a few republican senators say that they didn't like how tRUMP was running roughshod over everything, and while I was surprised to see these remarks, I agree w/ them (J Hawley of all people was one of them, and as much as I hate him, the fact that he said something iike this, regarding the disruptive slashing surprised me). My sister pointed this out to me the other day.

After seeing pres. muskrat and tRUMP run over the American people w/ their BS thus far, I think we'll need someone like Bernie, who's compassionate and will restore the American conscious, after being gutted by muskrat and tRUMP. Either that, we all need to closely look at the Executive Branch, and the ways that tRUMP seriously abused this office, throw him in jail, and remake the Executive Branch big-time.

,,,but on here I wasn't allowed to speak about it. I still think he would have been a decent president and he was the best choice. Bernie was not a media whore flipping this way and that. He refused to leave the most disenfranchised behind like me. He was the most Christian Jewish man like his great prophet, because those are the teaching we all were taught the ethics we should aspire to be..

I am sorry, but for me that was a bittersweet time, I still mourn it. Bernie has not changed his message for 40 years, speaking the truth to to world. Too bad he was ridiculed and ignored by many of my own people. At this time i am crying writing this. I truly love this great man.

And Bernie, if you are listening, I will be there in the crowd as I always have been whenever you come out to speak. I am also watching you on YT and wherever I can find you. The truth is your spirit is so bright, how can anybody with a hopeful and loving heart not find you?

God bless you Sir!

Sincerely, Cat in Seattle
