The tourists cancelling their holidays to Trump's America

Source: The Independent

Friday 21 February 2025 22:38 GMT

A long-standing tradition of crossing the border to enjoy baseball has come to an end for one couple. Peter Mulholland and his wife will not be making their annual trip from Vancouver to Seattle to watch the Toronto Blue Jays play the Mariners this year.

Citing growing frustrations with U.S. President Donald Trump’s policies and rhetoric, Mulholland pointed to several key issues influencing his decision. Trump’s threats of imposing tariffs on Canadian goods, discussions of annexing Canada as the 51st state, and the president’s characterization of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as a “dictator” were cited as contributing factors.

The culmination of these events ultimately led Mulholland to forego the annual baseball pilgrimage. “We were starting to get leery,” said the 69-year-old, semi-retired Vancouver resident. “The tariffs he’s trying to do is going to hurt both countries, that’ll become evident eventually, but it’s going to hurt us more.” Mulholland is one of a growing number of Canadian (sic) who are choosing not to vacation in the U.S. this year.

McKenzie McMillan, a travel consultant with the Vancouver-based Travel Group, said some of his clients have cancelled trips that were already booked. February is usually a busy month for the retail travel agency which specializes in both corporate and premium leisure travel as Canadians make plans for spring break vacations. “We’ve seen a complete drop off in any new requests or new interest in U.S. travel,” said McMillan. “I’ve had no requests for travel to the United States for about two weeks.”

I have heard complaints from local restaurant workers that the flocks of snowbirds have thinned out this year here in Southwest Florida. And with the recent anti-immigration activity traffic sure seems light for this time of year. I just feel terrible for our hard working Haitian community after Trump revoked their status.

…said there was always an influx of Canadians in February, the coldest month. I do not blame them at all for steering clear of the US just now.

As for myself, my 60th Kailua High School reunion will be in September in the old home town on O’ahu. But a couple of things decided us to not go: airline safety, and potential for catching something awful that the CDC won’t be capable of telling us about. Either way, it’s just too bad.

Air travel into and out of the US will get less safe with FAA cuts and with people in charge who favor profits for private businesses over consumer safety. By summer, with the federal government in total disarray we may be in a state of anarchy and not safe anywhere.

Lack of Canadian visitors will affect my county and area greatly.
We have Canadian businesses that employ US citizens.

25% tarriffs on Canadian goods would really impact my area.

Loved it there! Often in the summer we'd go to Lake George because it was lovely, not too crowded, and rather affordable. It seems that vacationers from Quebec also thought so, because they were frequently seen around the Lake George Village area at the southern end of the lake. Several of the hotels and local shops posted signs saying the "French is spoke here" for the tourists.

Well I was back in Lake George just 3 summers ago, and I didn't see any of that. I'm guessing the Quebequis (sp?) may have moved on. But it also may have been due to the Covid fears of the time.

had/has lots of kid’s from Toronto and Montreal. I’m curious if they will send their kid’s this summer, but many of them have been going to this camp for generations and there are precious few openings every year. They may not want to lose their spot. Family/kids have to go through interview if they are new to this camp and they only accept a few new campers every year.

It’s one of those camps where you go all summer and kid’s go for 8 years. My kid started going went when he was 6.

My son grew up there. He still lives in New York, but nowadays he's down in Manhattan.

During the time I was there, Schenectady, Albany, and Troy were all voting D. I don't think I knew anyone who voted R. One time I got to meet and shake the hand of Governor Mario Cuomo!

Congressperson district is either partly or all in Schenectady County.District goes into Amsterdam and Saratoga County.

Both Schenectady/Saratoga/Albany counties went for Harris by a healthy margin. Rensselaer County (Troy) went for the asshole 49% to 48% for Harris.

My town in Albany County went 80% to Harris, 15% to the asshole. We haven’t had a Republican elected to any office in my town in about 25 years.

Schenectady has seen a lot of improvement, especially it’s downtown. We have a subscription series at Proctors so are there at least once a month during the theatre season. Lots of really good restaurants now, too.

My H started his career at DOB under Mario and retired under Andrew. During Andrew’s administration he was with Homeland Security and DOB in very high positions and had almost daily interaction with Andrew, who was very difficult to work for, to say the least.

Mario hardly any direct work related contact, as he was just starting his career then, but he was just as difficult as Andrew.

I casually know a guy who has some properties in Wildwood NJ that he rents /leases to Canadians.
The properties have been in his family for years.
He says reservations are.down about 80-90% & the ones that have deposits are tenative. Wildwood NJ was popular with Canadians.
He's a Trump supporter.
I can't feel sorry for him. I know most of his income is generated during the summer.
I'm not gonna rub it in.

America's parks are world renowned and attract millions of visitors from all over the world. With the parks closed and tRump's nonstop BS tourists simply will not come to the U.S. In many places the short summer tourist season is when many people earn the majority of their income.

The real irony is that a significant number of the parks are in rural red states. Repug pols will have to explain why the tourist season has crashed and their constituents incomes have cratered. That is going to be a tough sell. Too bad - So sad.
