'What's it Gonna Take?' Angus King Warns Americans to Realize We Are In 'Biggest Constitutional Crisis' In U.S. History

Sen. Angus King (I-ME) issued an ominous warning to Americans this week, warning them its time to wake up and realize the country is in a major constitutional crisis. King joined some of his fellow Democrats who have warned in recent days that Elon Musks unilateral shuttering of federally mandated agencies is illegal and a violation of Congressional power.
King posted a clip from a recent floor speech he gave to X and wrote, We are in the middle of the biggest Constitutional crisis our nation has ever seen & every day were inching further from the democracy our founders created. Now is not and cannot be the time to stand idly by. Im urging my colleagues to wake up & protect this institution, added the longtime Independent, who caucuses with the Democrats.
Kings comments are particularly notable as he is one of two Independents in the U.S. Senate, but unlike Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), King is a true moderate and often endorses Republicans in his state like Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME).
The clip King shared was part of a Senate floor debate on DOGE, in which he said, Whats it going to take for us to wake up? And when I say us, I mean this entire body to wake up to whats going on here? Is it going to be too late? Is it going to be when the president has accreted all this power and the Congress is an afterthought? Whats it going to take?

be hopeful and optimistic, etc etc.
We have no data to support any of this nonsense.

Oh and telling us - 2026 election is coming. Legit election? Seriously?
We will be really glad if we are wrong, won't we...

Yes I would give anything for us to be wrong.

(5,246 posts)but I do hear all these politicos talking about "rise up" and "wake up". At least King seemed to be talking to his compatriots, and not just to us. WE have no power any longer. All we ever had was the voting booth... and they've corrupted that but good now. Any election we have will be just like those in Russia or other autocratic countries.
I believe most of us would move heaven and earth to have a leader from the Democratic party (or even an Independent) who said "Let's try this... follow me and let's see where it leads." Be WITH us and lend us their power and we'd more than support them with what power we have. I just hate people who bitch at everyone but never do anything or proffer anything. The important part is for the politico to be there WITH us... not just sending us out on our own. We can (and have) done that, and you can see how much attention that's gotten! (sigh) If we'd have Pelosi, Jeffries, or another member of the House or Senate marching and speaking with us, that *might* get us a little attention.

(865 posts)So many people here don't pay much attention to fucking anything outside of work--they tie their lives and even their identities so fucking hard to what they do for a living that there's no space or time for much of anything outside of it. And the larger culture of American capitalism encourages them to do just that.
Although I would say that most have had their lives and even their identities tied to what they do for a living.
It was not by choice.
But, you are correct. We have been made into our jobs. There is no society anymore. Just work time and rest time. Assuming you get a rest time.

(5,246 posts)I was totally lost after I retired from my job. I wasn't ready, but they didn't want to do 2-3 days of remote work to work with my with my disabilities. But I had so much of myself invested in the job, that it's just now... years afterwards... that I've begun to shed that persona. I'm now just trying to figure out who I really am!

(150,063 posts)take that Collins seat, since Collins is up for reelection next year.
That "spat" that Mills is engaged in with 45 seems to perhaps be a precursor for a possible run.
