US government announces $861 million for two solar farms in Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- The U.S. Department of Energy announced an $861 million loan guarantee on Wednesday to build two solar photovoltaic farms in Puerto Rico as persistent power outages plague the U.S. territory.

The project would be located in the southern coastal towns of Guayama and Salinas and backed by Clean Flexible Energy LLC, a subsidiary of The AES Corporation and TotalEenrgies Holdings USA Inc.

It would add up to 200 megawatts of solar generation and another 285 megawatts of storage capacity to Puerto Rico’s grid, according to U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer M. Granholm. The solar photovoltaic project is expected to generate about 460,000 megawatts of energy, enough to power some 43,000 homes, officials say.

The announcement comes as Puerto Rico continues to struggle with ongoing outages blamed on a crumbling electric grid that was razed by Hurricane Maria when it hit the island as a powerful Category 4 storm in September 2017. The grid, which is still being rebuilt, was in a fragile state even before the storm hit due to a lack of investment and maintenance.

One of my former homes in my younger years and of everywhere I've lived, it's the one I love second only to the farm where I live now and was born.

I lived in Ceiba, Fajardo and San Juan. My favorite recreational trips there were to the El Yunque Rain Forest and the islands of Culebra, Culebrita Island and Vieques. The snorkeling is outstanding and the flora and fauna uniquely fascinating at least to me. The beaches of course, are simply beautiful. El Morro and the restaurants and shops of Old San Juan are also fun places to explore.

I had planned on visiting friends before the hurricane devastated the island and my friends were forced to move to the mainland.

It visits me in my dreams.

Ceiba is located in the north-east coast of the island, bordering the Atlantic Ocean, south of Fajardo, north of Naguabo and southeast of Río Grande. Located about one hour's driving distance from San Juan, Ceiba is spread over 7 barrios and Ceiba Pueblo (the downtown area and administrative center). It is part of the Fajardo Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Fajardo (Spanish pronunciation: [faˈxaɾðo]) is a town and a municipality part of the San Juan-Caguas-Fajardo Combined Statistical Area in Puerto Rico.
Fajardo is the hub of much of the recreational boating in Puerto Rico and a popular launching port to Culebra, Vieques, and the U.S. and British Virgin Islands. It is also home to the largest marina in the Caribbean, called Puerto del Rey. The town contains various hotels and inns.

Offshore, near Fajardo, a few islets can be found. These are Icacos, Isla Palomino, Palominito, and Diablo, among other uninhabited coral islands and barrier reefs.
