Walz goes pheasant hunting with his own Beretta as campaign makes appeal to gun owners

Sleepy Eye, Minnesota Carrying a Beretta shotgun, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz trekked through tall straw-like grass for three hours on Saturday for opening day of the state's pheasant hunting season, but didn't get one shot off despite his efforts. "There's good days and there's great days pheasant hunting," Walz said when the day wrapped up.
Scott Rall, a friend of the governor who he often hunts with, made the sole kill on Saturday. Recovering the body of the birds was a top priority in the instructions given to the hunting party, but no one was able to find the carcass in the thick brush that at some points grew as tall as Walz himself.
Many of the pheasants and animals that did come up out of the tall grass and straw flew backward toward the press. At one point, that prompted Walz to seemingly allude to the 2006 hunting accident involving former Vice President Dick Cheney, in which Cheney accidentally shot a fellow hunter in the face.
"Every vice president joke ever made was about to be made right there. And I was just like this," Walz said as he motioned to taking his gun off of safety. "Too far," Walz said of one bird that was in his line of sight.

@Tim_Walz is out hunting pheasants for the season opener in MN.
The Harris Walz campaign recently announced the hunters, gun owners & anglers coalition.
Walz often says he supports the 2nd Amndmt but advocates for common sense legislation.
& we know Harris owns a Glock.

(492 posts)But:
* Fresh air
* Exercise
* For those of us who prefer being ready for even marginally plausible situations, practice at a useful skill
I'll admit that archery seems a better fit for the "useful skill" category, since the arrows are more reusable and more easily crafted by hand than gun ammunition.

(477 posts)I'm not a hunter but i love Skeet, Trap, Sporting Clays and the other variants. A big draw is simply the thrill of marksmanship itself. Blasting clay targets out of the sky is just a lot of fun. IMO better than hunting, since hunters may only take a couple shots all weekend but I can go through hundreds of targets. And no cute little critters need to die.

with my Wife and Daughters. It's family time out in nature. Sometimes we get skunked but it's still a great day outside. Other days we hit limit. Nothing like fresh game when you grow up with it.
Oldest daughter reloads. Makes her own ammo she hunts so much. You can save a bit, but she mostly does it for fun.

(19,537 posts)And the hunting license fees pay to preserve thousands of acres of habitat used by ALL species, not just pheasants. America's hunting traditions, when combined with smart game management, saved most of our wildlife from extinction. Deer, ducks, turkey, bear, geese. All were endangered 100 yr ago from unrestricted market hunting and habitat loss.

(7,476 posts)You probably never will but and its getting less popular. Most Americans are sedentary couch potatoes setting around with the remote, bitching at the TV kinda like Trump
There is more to hunting than killing
My wife and I are out the door for another full day. I just guide she shoots. She is just a beginner. Ive hunted all my life
For us its the scenery (its just past peak Fall), the adventure, the challenge, the solitude of nature (we live in a very remote area) the fresh air and the exercise ( we are both healthy and fat free). We shoot more pics than shells.
Sure we wake up sore but it feels good
We own a dozen guns including a Berretta

(161 posts)... and I appreciate seeing them work.
My father and his cousin had a tradition of going out on the first day of deer season. I don't think they ever came home with anything and probably never fired their guns. They just liked being out together in the woods. My father misses this, now that age-related stuff and geographic distance has made the tradition impractical.
I've seen some responses from fellow Dems who aren't hunters, don't have friends or family do, or are from areas where it's a thing, and I found some of their low-key eye-rolling about 'men doing manly things' not especially helpful.
We hear a lot about this group or that not being a monolith. This is another one.
