White women voters have been the backbone of the GOP for decades – but polls indicate their support for the party may erode this November, thanks to younger white women who are moving left at breakneck speed.

In the weeks after the 2016 presidential election, after Donald Trump stunned the world by defeating Hillary Clinton, media outlets seized on white women to explain his shock win. Forty-seven per cent of white women voted for Trump, while 45% backed Clinton, according to an analysis of validated voter files by the Pew Research Center.

Trump’s success with white women highlighted a longstanding truth: this group votes for Republicans. Over the last 72 years, a plurality of white women have voted for the Democratic candidate in only two presidential elections – in 1964, when Lyndon Johnson won 44 states, and in 1996, when Bill Clinton ran in a three-way race. Trump’s lead with white women even grew in 2020, when 53% supported him. In contrast, 95% of Black women voted for Joe Biden in 2020, along with 61% of Hispanic women, Pew found.

But quite a bit has changed since 2020 – especially for women. The US supreme court overturned Roe v Wade in 2022, transforming abortion rights into a major election issue. Kamala Harris took over as the Democratic candidate from Joe Biden, becoming the first woman of color to secure a major-party nomination for president.

2. With choice on the ballot in many states, we should have high turnout this year

Younger, educated, well-traveled, well-read, etc. are more likely to be liberal.

Plenty of things have changed in America since the last 2 presidential elections leading people to rethink their support and get new people interested elections. Harris's policies, plans, and positive attitude to life should be more appealing to certain types than Trump's doom and gloom and claims that immigrants are going to eat your cat.

I personally think we are on on the fence if we can be saved as a country. Having 40+% of voters think Republicans have the right vision: one of forcing 10 yr old girls to have their rapist's baby, of dictatorships, of Christian nationalism, of huge tax cuts for billionaires, of stripping the right of women to vote, that is what Republicans in the majority of state legislatures and Congress want and they keep getting re-elected to do it so, based on all the evidence, thats what I got to believe 40+% of Americans want.

10. Lots Of Reasons Behind All That.

We’ve let the Repukes pretty much destroy public education. We’ve let them define us as (insert your choice of gratuitous insults). And we’ve let them frame the issues. Just a few examples.

We absolutely suck at messaging and framing. The Reichwingers have figured out how to frame/define things using statements that will fit on a bumper sticker, and usually at a 4th grade reading level (and that’s probably generous. lol). We usually have some kind wonk, like John Kerry, who can only speak using $500 words. Average Joe Moron can’t understand what he’s being told and feels like he’s being talked down to.

I’m not saying that, unlike the Repukes, that it’s bad for us to have experts. Far from it. But we need our forward facing people to be able to translate the jargon into everyday “‘Mur’can.”

12. Abortion is a big part of it.

White anti-abortion women have the luxury of being single issue voters where non-white anti-abortion women have to balance their opposition to abortion against their other interests.

I do think things have been changing in the post-covid and post-dobbs world. Many of those republican women are discovering what being anti abortion means and they don't like it. At the same time, many people (not just white women) are finding new reasons to vote for republicans, as we appear to be undergoing a minor, at the very least, political realignment. So who knows how it'll shake out this election.

and as a liberal I'm not very popular here. These women are brainwashed by their churches. I want Kamala to win so bad, but I don't have much hope that the votes will come from white suburban women. They are literally Stepford wives.
