Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.), who served in the House for more than 27 years, died Wednesday morning, his office announced.
Pascrell, 87, had been hospitalized in July to be treated for a respiratory infection, and spent some time in intensive care. The congressman moved from the hospital to a rehabilitation facility earlier this month, but was rushed back to the hospital days later.
"It is with deep sadness that we announce that Bill Pascrell Jr., our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away this morning. As our United States Representative, Bill fought to his last breath to return to the job he cherished and to the people he loved. Bill lived his entire life in Paterson and had an unwavering love for the city he grew up in and served. He is now at peace after a lifetime devoted to our great nation America," a statement on Pascrell's X account reads.
Pascrells death puts a bookend on his nearly three-decade tenure in the House, which he was first elected to in 1996. The New Jersey Democrat beat then-Rep. Bill Martini (R) to represent the Garden States 8th Congressional District. Redistricting moved him to the 9th Congressional District later in his career on Capitol Hill.

I think his seat can be filled in November. It'll be interesting to see who steps up..

(4,288 posts)* I wasn't holding out much hope for a recovery. It was clear to me that he was near the end and that he was probably already in hospice or receiving palliative care only.
His service is definitely something to be admired and respected.
Rest in Peace.

(48,339 posts)Every Labor Day Sunday, he'd appear on the balcony of the Botto House in Haledon, home of the American Labor Museum and give a speech. Hoards of union members below would loudly cheer.
Or go to Youtube and watch him passionately defend his positions.
I grabbed his sleeve as he was leaving a political event and begged him to call out Trump. He stopped, listened to me, and promised to do his best.
He was truly "of The People".
I am devastated.

(12,795 posts)He was the embodiment of public servant and fighter for his constituents and veterans. In Pascrell's office veterans went to the front of the line. I was a regular at his events, once leading the flag salute for which he called me personally to say thank you the following day. He restored my faith in government that was on shaky ground since the Vietnam War.
On a few occasions I was invited to Washington for his swearing in ceremony. He would reserve a room in the Library of Congress and bring three busloads of constituents to DC for the celebration. I would always see the staff of other Congressman at his parties and inquired why they were at Pascrell's party. They all said Pascrell has the best parties.
I think I speak for many when I say we were lucky to have him represent us in the House.
I remember him at our town's annual St. Patrick's Day Parade and going into the local pubs to celebrate with the people.
RIP Bill. You were a great Representative and an even better human being, a true man of the people.
