SS United States must have a plan by Sept. 12 to leave South Philly, judge says
"You're not entitled to be at the pier forever," U.S. District Judge Anita B. Brody said to the ship's stewards.

The stewards of the SS United States, a 1,000-foot vessel colloquially known as South Philadelphia's Ikea boat, have to forge and finalize a deal to move the ship by Sept. 12 or risk losing custody of the ocean steam liner to its current landlord Penn Warehousing. ... It's not the reprieve the SS United States Conservancy, which has long sought to give the ship new life, angled for in federal court Monday. The group wanted U.S. District Judge Anita B. Brody to reconsider a June decision that gave them until mid-September to move the ship.

But Brody denied the motion, saying she was concerned that giving the Conservancy any extension would lead to attorneys "crying" in court, pleading for more time as the revised deadline approached. ... "You're not entitled to be at the pier forever," Brody told Conservancy attorney Scott E. Wardell. ... Brody did give the Conservancy a partial victory. The group only needs to have a plan to move the ship finalized by the September deadline. Failure to do so opens the door for the Conservancy to lose possession of the SS United States to its landlord.

Monday's hearing was the latest development in the ship's yearslong rent dispute with its Pier 82 landlord. Penn Warehousing wanted to double the daily dockage fee in 2021 for the SS United States to $1,700 but the Conservancy refused to acknowledge the new rate, arguing the lease that prevented such a rent spike. The parties ended up in court early this year. ... The saga appeared to reach a climax in June. Brody absolved the Conservancy from paying the back rent Penn Warehousing claimed the ship owed on account of the rent increase, but made clear the vessel had to move. (1) A month later, the Conservancy asked the judge to let the ship stay in place until December. (2)

American towns abandoned industries that one gave us a middle class.

That's why they call it the "rust belt".

My father was a career Marine, and his new duty station was in Stuttgart, Germany, on a base that had all four branches of the military. We sailed out of New York and docked In Le Havre, France. A few years earlier we had been stationed at a Naval Base in Morocco. We sailed to Morocco on the SS Constitution and sailed back to the US on the SS Independence. I believe both of those ships are now gone. I feel so old!!!

...to cross the Atlantic in either direction, retaining the Blue Riband for the highest average speed since her maiden voyage in 1952, a title she still holds.

taken out of service in 1969. For almost four times the period she was in service she's been rusting at a dock.

Seeing as how the government paid for most of that ship, they should scrap it and send the proceeds back to the U.S.Treasury.

It would be nice if the S.S. United States could be prestoed back to pristine condition with a magic wand, but that ain't gonna happen. It's time to let it go and scrap it. It will never be brought back.

... alas, nobody is gonna come up with the cash to put her back in shape. It's been what, 50+ years since she was taken out of commission? Past time to get out the blowtorches.

American engines made by U.S. Union labor.

All that work by American shipbuilders.

All that material handled by American union Longshoremen.

All the work by union pipe sitters..

She has an American soul from bow to stern.

Yeah, cut her up and melt her down and sell the steel to China so they can make junk and sell it back to us

Its sad it has come to this.

Warships seem to have much better luck at being saved.

Talk about our national pride and making things here...

I find the lack of caring disgusting.

We sailed back on the QE2 5 years later when we moved back to the USA. Can't tell you much about that either as I had chicken pox and was in the cabin the whole time.
