Utah indicts pilot for allegedly threatening to shoot captain if flight was diverted

A grand jury in Utah issued the indictment against Jonathan J. Dunn on Oct. 18 over an incident that happened in August 2022, charging him with interference with a flight crew, according to federal court records.

The Transportation Department's inspector general's office said in an email sent Tuesday that Dunn was the first officer, or co-pilot, on the flight and was authorized to carry a gun under a program run by the Transportation Security Administration.

"After a disagreement about a potential flight diversion due to a passenger medical event, Dunn told the Captain they would be shot multiple times if the Captain diverted the flight," the inspector general's office said.

The inspector general described Dunn as a California pilot. It did not identify the airline on which the incident occurred, saying only that it was a commercial airline flight. The office did not give the flight's intended route, or whether it was diverted.

2. Here is some unconfirmed second hand information about Mr. Dunn

This is from two different fellow Delta pilots I flew with a while back, prior to my retirement.

Dunn is a Q fan, a MAGAT and a rabid anti-vaxxer. He evidently got kicked out of the Air Force reserves for refusing the COVID vaccine and has attempted to sue the Air Force over it.

I never flew with him. I would have remembered that. Delta fired him over a year ago.

3. I've known a couple of commercial pilots that were nuttier than squirrel shit

One flew GA jets and the other was a Southwest pilot who lost his medical due to mental health issues. Both were rabid anti-vaxxers. Both were gun nuts. Both were MAGA/Q-loons.

9. Yep, CBS confirms that:

On Wednesday, multiple sources confirmed to CBS News that Dunn was also the plaintiff in an unsuccessful U.S. Supreme Court case last year in which — as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force — Dunn attempted to block the Air Force from disciplining him for refusing to take the mandatory COVID-19 vaccine on religious grounds. In April 2022, the high court ruled against Dunn's request for a religious exemption by a 6-3 margin.

According to court documents, Dunn was commissioned in the Air Force in 2003, and flew two combat tours in Afghanistan. He left active duty in 2014 and joined the Air Force Reserve.

In August 2021 he was given command of the 452nd Contingency Response Squadron, court documents read. However, after refusing to get vaccinated, he was relieved of duty in February 2022.

in the movie "Airplane" in which the Captain was describing the chain of command (paraphrased) ".... and there was Lieutenant Easy and Major Dunn and I was over Easy and under Dunn".
