Jan. 6 rioter convicted, sentenced in secret

WASHINGTON — Hundreds of rioters have been charged, convicted and sentenced for joining the mob attack on the U.S. Capitol. Unlike their cases, Samuel Lazar’s appears to have been resolved in secret — kept under seal with no explanation, even after his release from prison.

Lazar, 37, of Ephrata, Pa., was arrested in July 2021 on charges that he came to the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, dressed in tactical gear and protective goggles, and used chemical spray on officers who were desperately trying to beat back the angry Donald Trump supporters. There is no public record of a conviction or a sentence in Lazar’s court docket.

But the Bureau of Prisons told The Associated Press that the man was released from federal custody this week after completing a sentence for assaulting or resisting a federal officer. Lazar was sentenced in Washington’s federal court on March 17 to 30 months in prison, according to the Bureau of Prisons, but there’s no public record of such a hearing. He had been jailed since July 2021.

Questions about Lazar’s case have been swirling for months, but the details of his conviction and sentence have not been previously reported. The Justice Department has refused to say why the case remains under wraps, and attorneys for Lazar did not respond to multiple requests for comment from The Associated Press. The judge overseeing Lazar’s case in May rejected a request from media outlets — including the AP — to release any sealed records that may exist.

A Pennsylvania Donald Trump enthusiast who attended an event with Rudy Giuliani when he was wanted by the FBI for allegedly assaulting officers at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 was ordered held in jail until trial.

Samuel Lazar, a Trump supporter arrested last month after being identified as a rioter who assaulted law enforcement at the Capitol on Jan. 6, was ordered held until trial by Magistrate Judge Robin Meriweather.

Here is the idiot with RW loon PA state Senator Doug Mastriano (who ran for governor and lost by almost 15% against the winner Josh Shapiro (D)) -

And Lazar was there with him at one of Ghouliani's PA events -

Mastriano was at the J6 insurrection and had commissioned a bus to bring people down -

Since Lazar was from Lancaster County, PA, the main local paper there had several write-ups including this - https://lancasteronline.com/news/local/lancaster-county-man-on-fbi-most-wanted-list-in-capitol-attack-footage-shows/article_b10587f4-998c-11eb-b115-e3e95ef1f1dd.html

6. More from AP

Sep 2023

George Washington University criminal law professor Randall Eliason, who spent 12 years as a federal prosecutor in Washington, said he couldn’t remember any case during his Justice Department tenure in which a sentencing hearing and sentence were placed under seal. Eliason said it’s possible that “either there’s some kind of security concern about him personally, or maybe more likely that he’s cooperating in some respect that they don’t want the people he’s cooperating against to know about.”

But many Jan. 6 defendants have cooperation deals with the government, and their cases haven’t been resolved in secret. Defendants who agree to cooperate with prosecutors often get their sentencing hearings delayed until they finish cooperating.

“The fact that he also got sentenced, went to prison and is already out, that whole situation is just unusual,” Eliason said.

If the Mob learned of this secret deal, like we are now, they'd whack him just for potentially cooperating. Strange. Guess we just don't need to know the details right now and I'm fine with that.

Some are expecting full transparency. I understand the public’s right to know about Jan6 and the accused identities, under normal circumstances.

But this seems like a special case. If disclosing more information will cause this person (who has paid for his illegal behavior according to our justice system), any danger, then I will be really angry.

I’m especially angry with the media who continue to pursue this. FFS

Why don’t they go after all the crap about MAGA. Why don’t they do more to educate the public about what Biden is doing for the American people.

A militant Donald Trump supporter whose photo is featured on an FBI wanted list because he was caught on video battling with police officers at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 attended a political event last week for a Trump-loving Pennsylvania politician who backed the former president’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

The event’s headliner: Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani, who called for “trial by combat” during his speech on Jan. 6 and whose phones and computers were seized in a Justice Department investigation last month.

Samuel Lazar, who is Capitol suspect No. 275 on the FBI website, posed for photos alongside right-wing Pennsylvania state Sen. Doug Mastriano (R) at the May 15 event headlined by Giuliani. A tipster sent the photos to HuffPost after spotting them on Facebook...

Mastriano, whose campaign spent thousands of dollars on buses to bring people to D.C. on Jan. 6, later issued a statement saying those who violated the law must be prosecuted. A Jan. 10 story on Lancaster Online chronicled some of Lazar’s trip in D.C., sometimes relying on the videos he posted. The story highlighted his military-style outfit and his patch, which read “Blessed be the LORD, my rock, who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle.” In a Facebook post after the Capitol attack, the news outlet reported, Lazar wrote that there was “a time for peace and there’s a time for war. Our constitution allows us to abolish our [government] and install a new one in [its] place.”
