WASHINGTON Hundreds of rioters have been charged, convicted and sentenced for joining the mob attack on the U.S. Capitol. Unlike their cases, Samuel Lazars appears to have been resolved in secret kept under seal with no explanation, even after his release from prison.
Lazar, 37, of Ephrata, Pa., was arrested in July 2021 on charges that he came to the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, dressed in tactical gear and protective goggles, and used chemical spray on officers who were desperately trying to beat back the angry Donald Trump supporters. There is no public record of a conviction or a sentence in Lazars court docket.
But the Bureau of Prisons told The Associated Press that the man was released from federal custody this week after completing a sentence for assaulting or resisting a federal officer. Lazar was sentenced in Washingtons federal court on March 17 to 30 months in prison, according to the Bureau of Prisons, but theres no public record of such a hearing. He had been jailed since July 2021.
Questions about Lazars case have been swirling for months, but the details of his conviction and sentence have not been previously reported. The Justice Department has refused to say why the case remains under wraps, and attorneys for Lazar did not respond to multiple requests for comment from The Associated Press. The judge overseeing Lazars case in May rejected a request from media outlets including the AP to release any sealed records that may exist.

(161,753 posts)Here is the idiot with RW loon PA state Senator Doug Mastriano (who ran for governor and lost by almost 15% against the winner Josh Shapiro (D)) -

And Lazar was there with him at one of Ghouliani's PA events -

Mastriano was at the J6 insurrection and had commissioned a bus to bring people down -

Since Lazar was from Lancaster County, PA, the main local paper there had several write-ups including this - https://lancasteronline.com/news/local/lancaster-county-man-on-fbi-most-wanted-list-in-capitol-attack-footage-shows/article_b10587f4-998c-11eb-b115-e3e95ef1f1dd.html

WTF?
George Washington University criminal law professor Randall Eliason, who spent 12 years as a federal prosecutor in Washington, said he couldnt remember any case during his Justice Department tenure in which a sentencing hearing and sentence were placed under seal. Eliason said its possible that either theres some kind of security concern about him personally, or maybe more likely that hes cooperating in some respect that they dont want the people hes cooperating against to know about.
But many Jan. 6 defendants have cooperation deals with the government, and their cases havent been resolved in secret. Defendants who agree to cooperate with prosecutors often get their sentencing hearings delayed until they finish cooperating.
The fact that he also got sentenced, went to prison and is already out, that whole situation is just unusual, Eliason said.

(21,031 posts)If the Mob learned of this secret deal, like we are now, they'd whack him just for potentially cooperating. Strange. Guess we just don't need to know the details right now and I'm fine with that.
Some are expecting full transparency. I understand the publics right to know about Jan6 and the accused identities, under normal circumstances.
But this seems like a special case. If disclosing more information will cause this person (who has paid for his illegal behavior according to our justice system), any danger, then I will be really angry.
Im especially angry with the media who continue to pursue this. FFS
Why dont they go after all the crap about MAGA. Why dont they do more to educate the public about what Biden is doing for the American people.

..........Both Mastriano and Lazar were at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, though Mastriano claimed he left when he realized the protest was no longer peaceful. Mastriano, whose campaign spent thousands of dollars on buses to bring people to D.C. on Jan. 6, later issued a statement saying those who violated the law must be prosecuted. A Jan. 10 story on Lancaster Online chronicled some of Lazars trip in D.C., sometimes relying on the videos he posted. The story highlighted his military-style outfit and his patch, which read Blessed be the LORD, my rock, who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle. In a Facebook post after the Capitol attack, the news outlet reported, Lazar wrote that there was a time for peace and theres a time for war. Our constitution allows us to abolish our [government] and install a new one in [its] place.
