Mayor Adams drops bombshell, says migrant crisis will 'destroy' NYC
Source: New York Daily News
Adams comments represent perhaps his starkest rhetoric yet on the situation, which began to take shape in the spring of 2022 when asylum seekers started flooding into the city after crossing into American border states with some coming on buses sent by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.
I dont see an ending to this. This issue will destroy New York City. Destroy New York City. Were getting 10,000 migrants a month, he said at a town hall-style meeting on the Upper West Side. All of us are going to be impacted by this. I said it last year when we had 15,000, and Im telling you now with 110,000 the city we knew, were about to lose.
Adams remarks came just hours after his administration announced the city would remove hundreds of single adult migrants from hotels and move them to a mega shelter on Randalls Island to make room families with children amid a shortage of shelter space.

You'll have to kidnap them and force them to go back to Texas.

(8,387 posts)Unrelated to the specific issue at hand, this is a jaw-droppingly dumb statement.
For those who grew up in cities, I would like to know if you have kept "the city you knew" in, say, 1970.
Cities are dynamic and always changing.
I certainly hope to lose the city I knew, because the past is not the future.

(10,969 posts)I was very pleased with how Mayor Daley changed it. When I was a kid, the city was a tragedy just about everywhere. After his tenure, so so much better. Not perfect, but definitely reversed the decay and made it world class.

(10,969 posts)It's not in your article, but an audience member asked about Comptroller Brad Lander's wife heading up non-profits that get money for shelters.
Adams loved that question. He had the person who asked it repeat it for everyone to hear.

(11,203 posts)Anecdotal, but after taking a cross country road trip, I saw many smaller towns off the interstate desperate for workers. I ate at diners and eavesdropped on locals talking about decent paying jobs that go unfilled and that younger generations raised there are not returning after getting higher education elsewhere.

(5,353 posts)that say, closed today because we are short staffed, on all sorts of businesses including restaurants, smaller stores, and even veterinary clinics. There are plenty of jobs out there so it's not like the immigrants would be taking jobs away from U.S. citizens.
A 24 hour veterinary clinic decided to close permanently because they cannot keep it staffed even with receptionists, and cleaning staff. Now the nearest emergency clinics for those who live in the surrounding area is an hour to two hour drive.

Yes, it's not fair to these poor asylum seekers, but shipping them back where they came from may be the only way to teach these fascist traitor thugs to knock it off.

Our laws allow the migrant to claim refugee status and enter until their claims are adjudicated.

(38,735 posts)The population explosion in the developing world is coming home to roost.
It's not going to let up, here or in Europe, and he's not wrong that there's aren't enough resources, in NYC, in Texas, anywhere, to handle the influx. 10K/month is 120K/year, and many of these are refugee claimants, not admitted immigrants.
There's a housing crisis as it is - this demands Federal action, and the only action the Repukes will fund would be punitive.
