(33,809 posts)Looks like tornadoes are practically a year-long thng now.
Back in the day, we only worried about spring.

(33,809 posts)I was in the Dallas tornado, 1957.
Thar was early April.
My aunti and uncle were in a tornado related
to a hurriane, north of Houston,
late summer.
I'm on the south end of Tornado Alley. We get ours in early Spring. Slowly they start moving North along with the Jet Stream and we work our way out of them usually by April.

(11,784 posts)I couldnt really capture it, but I saw the rainbow like a 240 degree angle which is nuts! In the pic you can see it curving past where 180 would end!

This is a view looking to the west 15 minutes before (away from the lake)

(5,025 posts)The National Weather Service has confirmed that multiple tornadoes touched down in the Chicago area Wednesday evening, including one at O'Hare International Airport.
Earlier on Wednesday, the NWS urged Cook County residents to seek shelter immediately after a "large and extremely dangerous" tornado was spotted near Summit.
While unclear if it was a separate storm, tornado damage was also reported in nearby Bridgeview and Stickney.
Confirmed tornadoes were also reported by the NWS near South Elgin and Campton Hills in Kane County, before a tornado was spotted near O'Hare International Airport.

(6,804 posts)We had five different warnings going for a while in and around Chicago. I'm a couple of miles east of O'Hare, and went to the basement garage in our building when the siren went off. We got an intense amount of rain, the drain that is suppose to keep it from running into the garage couldn't keep up, but it missed us. It's unusual for tornadoes to make it all the way to the lake, but these did.
Damage reports are coming in, so far, no deaths or serious injuries confirmed, but there has been some severe damage in several places. There was one that just about followed the Stevenson freeway right into the city that did a lot of damage around Stickney and Archer Heights.

(36,504 posts)people were checking their phones and seeing a tornado was showing up 30 miles away!
fifteen minutes later the warning was over.
an hour later, siren again.
phones showing another tornado 30 miles away again (but in a different town--30 miles from the first one)
twenty minutes later the warning was over.
what a fucked up afternoon/evening.
radio on drive home was talking about countryside being hit, and various locations in chgo.
i'm trying to listen to the local news on tv now, wondering wth... ???
usually everything turns green (imo) when there is a tornado threat but not today. a bit cloudy on first siren (no green), and sunny on the second siren (no green)

(26,350 posts)Every summer we took the train or flew from California to visit. One year I was sleeping over at my uncles house who lived in the Oak park area. I was woken up and rushed down into the cellar as a tornado was coming. I remember the sounds of the creaking of the house and the wind. The next day I saw cars overturned, downed poles and pieces of peoples roofs on the street. It was kind of apocalyptic in my 10 year old mind, living in San Francisco I knew about earthquakes but not tornados.
