North Carolina GOP overrides abortion veto, putting 12-week ban into effect BY JOSEPH CHOI - 05/16/2

Source: The Hill

The GOP-controlled North Carolina General Assembly on Tuesday evening overrode a veto from the governor on a bill that prohibits abortions after 12 weeks and imposes more restrictions on providers and patients.
Snip...
North Carolina had allowed for abortions up to 20 weeks, but that time frame is now reduced to 12 weeks as the bill becomes law.

The 12-week ban is set to go into effect immediately. Some provisions will go into effect later this year, such as heightened restrictions on administering medical abortions and licensing requirements for new abortion facilities.

However, N.C. Democratic lawmakers have argued the law actually limits abortions to a shorter time frame, owing to how it reduces when medical abortions can be performed to 10 weeks. Medical abortions account for more than half of all abortions in the U.S.

Case in the Supremacy Court that will be heard this summer, is from the same North Carolina and does exactly that, gives legislators full power to overturn elections and appoint their choice. If ruled in favor, it will spread state to state faster than abortion bans.
You are right, priority one, or no turn out matters. Fuck the GQP.

Angry Ex-Staffers Speak Out on 'Pro-Choice' Democrat's Stunning Abortion Betrayal
Susan Rinkunas
Sat, May 13, 2023 at 8:00 AM EDT·7 min read

Imagine campaigning for a Democratic politician—a thankless, low-paying job, especially at the state level—because you believe in what they stand for. The candidate gives powerful speeches about abortion rights that make you proud. You’re in a purple state, where every single seat in the legislature is critical to protecting abortion access. So you join the fight, help them win, and continue working for them in the legislature. Then inexplicably, in the middle of their term, that politician does an about-face, switches parties, and votes in favor of an extreme abortion ban, delivering Republicans the one vote they needed to override a veto and actually shutter clinics in the state.

Two (now former) aides to North Carolina State Rep. Tricia Cotham found themselves in that position earlier this month. Cotham, a Democrat until recently who was endorsed by EMILY’s List, had given speeches for years about abortion rights, sworn over and over to defend them, and even talked about her own medically necessary abortion. “My womb and my uterus is not up for your political grab,” she said in one particularly passionate 2015 speech.

...snip...

The people who helped elect Cotham and worked for her are, understandably, feeling devastated, betrayed, and confused.

Snip...

“It makes you wonder, did this person ever believe anything at all?” Jonathan Coby, who advised Cotham’s campaigns and resigned from her staff in April, told me in an interview. “For her to vote for this is not just a betrayal of her district, but it’s a betrayal of who she has portrayed herself to be for her entire life.” Coby said everyone he’s spoken to on the ground in North Carolina feels “deeply angry” and “heartbroken”—and not just about the “disgusting and awful” politics of the move. “There’s also a real human betrayal of just using and discarding people,” he said.
Autumn Alston, a Democratic activist who canvassed for Cotham’s two most recent campaigns and advised her often, echoed that sentiment. “She used people when she needed them and now she has abandoned them,” Alston told me, noting that Cotham stopped contacting her after switching parties.
Snip...

“The only thing that I can say for sure about Tricia Cotham from here on out is that she will always be the victim,” Coby said. “That is just who she believes herself to be, just a victim of life.”

My commentary:
This article paints a picture of an egotistical, duplicitous whiner. Shallow and self entitled, she's a real piece of work. Disgusting. Turncoat Tricia.

Tricia now...

Prior to her party switch, she ran on a traditional Democratic Party platform. She had voted for abortion rights legislation and even spoken of her own experience having an abortion. Shortly after her party switch, she was the deciding vote for legislation to severely curtail abortion rights in North Carolina.[1]

and honestly i thought that might explain it as well as anything else. i also read a denial from tim moore yesterday about that. i don't know.

yeah. apparently she's just a horrible person. my only comfort is that she is not going to be re-elected from where she got here. it is incredibly disheartening to see what's happening and know that this FUCK OF A HUMAN, a woman no less, is playing such an outsized role in allowing the republicans to succeed in their wretched pursuit of permanent minority rule.

i hate republicans.

Lot of angry women and men need to be reminded that the one night stand they had might result in an unwanted pregnancy and they’re stuck with the woman or have to pay child support for 18 years for that child.
