Biden taps Harvard cancer surgeon Monica Bertagnolli to lead National Institutes of Health

President Joe Biden on Monday will announce plans to nominate Dr. Monica Bertagnolli as director of the National Institutes of Health. Bertagnolli, who became the first woman to lead the National Cancer Institute last year, must be confirmed by the Senate. The NIH has not had a permanent director since Francis C. Collins retired in December 2021 after serving 12 years under presidents Obama, Trump and Biden.
In a statement shared by the White House, Biden said Bertagnolli is a "world-class physician-scientist whose vision and leadership will ensure NIH continues to be an engine of innovation to improve the health of the American people." Biden praised her efforts to advance his "cancer moonshot" initiative he first announced as vice president and recharged as president. He lauded her efforts to marshal partners and resources to launch efforts in cancer prevention, early detection, childhood cancers and clinical trials.
Before being tapped to lead the National Cancer Institute, Bertagnolli was a surgical oncology professor at Harvard Medical School and a surgeon at Brigham and Womens Hospital, a Harvard teaching hospital. In December, Bertagnolli disclosed she had early breast cancer. At the time, she said she would need to undergo surgery and possible treatment but said the prognosis was "very favorable."
The National Institutes of Health includes 27 institutes and centers, including the National Cancer Institute, focusing on aging, cancer, heart, lung and other diseases. NIH issues grants to researchers in the United States and overseas. Biden requested Congress approve a $51.1 billion budget for NIH in fiscal 2024, up from this year's $47 billion budget.
