Elon Musk's Twitter drops government-funded media labels

Source: ABC News

Twitter has removed labels describing global media organizations as government-funded or state-affiliated, a move that comes after the Elon Musk-owned platform started stripping blue verification checkmarks from accounts that don't pay a monthly fee.

Among those no longer labeled was National Public Radio in the U.S., which announced last week that it would stop using Twitter after its main account was designated state-affiliated media, a term also used to identify media outlets controlled or heavily influenced by authoritarian governments, such as Russia and China.

Twitter later changed the label to “government-funded media,” but NPR — which relies on the government for a tiny fraction of its funding — said it was still misleading.

Canadian Broadcasting Corp. and Swedish public radio made similar decisions to quit tweeting. CBC's government-funded label vanished Friday, along with the state-affiliated tags on media accounts including Sputnik and RT in Russia and Xinhua in China.

And sadly he won't be the one suffering when it goes under, it'll be his employees. He'll still have a shit-ton of money and will continue living like a king no matter what.

Where he can build a new rocket every time one blows up real good. Sadly, every time he blows up twitter there are permanent consequences and no new twitter, just the old banged up one with passengers fleeing the burning vessel.

5. And I suspect his actions with Twitter is hurting Tesla at the same time.

For the time being at least the target customer base for Tesla is going to be somewhat left leaning, and he's done a pretty good job of pissing off that share of the population. And at the same time there are more and more options becoming available for people who want an electric vehicle.

because he also removed any labels from the Chinese, Russian and Iranian propaganda news accounts. I think that was his original desire anyway. He will likely get favorable business deals in exchange for taking steps to greatly increase the infiltration of disinformation from those countries. So he first slaps a label on NPR and gets the expected outrage and lets that boil awhile. Then he uses that as cover to remove the label and seem like he is responding to the criticism but he also removes the other labels as well.
