House passes anti-trans sports bill
Source: CNN Politics
The House voted on Thursday to pass a GOP-led bill that would ban transgender athletes from womens and girls sports at federally funded schools and educational institutions.
The bill is not expected to be taken up by the Democratic-controlled Senate and the White House has issued a veto threat. But the vote shows that Republicans are working to spotlight the issue and it comes amid a GOP-led push in states across the country to pass similar bills restricting transgender athletes participation in sports.
The House bill would prohibit transgender women and girls from playing on sports teams consistent with their gender identity. It seeks to amend federal law to require that sex shall be recognized based solely on a persons reproductive biology and genetics at birth, for the purpose of determining compliance with Title IX in athletics, according to the legislative text.
Title IX prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs or activities that receive funding from the federal government, and applies to schools and other educational institutions.

MAGA GQP: We need to do something about trans people playing sports!
Fuck these conspiracy theorist lunatics. Fuck Marjorie Greene, Steve Bannon, and Alex Jones. They brought this craziness on us.

(193,449 posts)Kansas passed one of these. Their state high school organization said that they knew of 2 trans students who wanted to participate in athletics. 11 if you include clubs and probably debate.
North Carolina passed one too (maybe just their House) and a there are grand total of 15 trans students it will effect.
Thats from memory so

(11,995 posts)Guess they believe females that Transition, are really just females and inferior, as they all believe, so no way they could beat REAL males. We should reissue the Jenner Wheaties Box just to watch GQP poop themselves and maybe they could ban the Kardashians, like books. They all sure offend me.

(4,287 posts)There is no similar case corresponding to that of Lia Thomas. So, there is no sense of unfairness relating to your question which has been created in public opinion for the GOP to exploit.
Are there any trans-gendered men who have successfully taken any titles away from cis-gendered men? I don't know of any. Even if there were, the "ethos" around that sort of a defeat would have the public tell those who were defeated to "suck it up, losers!" At least, that is my guess. Then, if further complaints were encountered, it would quickly descend into an imitation of the bully from The Simpson's and "Ha! Ha! You were beaten by a girl!" would be expressed.
One of the problems with this whole issue is that it depends on a similar sense of fairness existing on both sides of the debate. It is not going to work out for Democrats politically to expect the GOP to mirror of the Democrats' sense of fairness on this issue.
If the Democrats make this a primary issue, they will likely lose independents in the next election in spite of everything the GOP has done to destroy women's rights.
So, to answer your question more succinctly, there is nothing to be gained by the GOP if they were to do what you suggest in your question, while there is a lot to be lost for the Democrats in opposing this issue.
The primary issue related to this topic should be one of healthcare and ensuring that all people have access to healthcare. To allow this to be made into an issue about sports does not serve the Democrats well.

(4,287 posts)As I pointed out, there is an inherent difference in what fairness means to both sides of the debate. Essentially, the men's division is seen as an open division - winning is perceived as being achieved by merit. So, effectively, no one really cares who competes in it. The women's division is seen as protected, and winning is by merit* - if it were actually open, women would not win except rarely, if at all, is the belief. So, people actually do care who competes in it.
That's the framing that I think is in play around this issue.
Thanks for the information regarding those athletes. I had never heard of them. (I did not say there weren't any, merely that I did not know of any.)
I hope that your analysis is correct and that I am wrong, but I think this issue will gain a foothold in the battleground states. How large of a foothold remains to be seen. Almost no one (save a few like Michael Moore) thought Trump could win in 2016. Please do keep in mind how important sports are in this country. (Who, after all, are the highest paid state employees in most (if not all) states?)
We'll see how things turn out. The House bill will likely not make it beyond the Senate: Speaker Jeffries reiterated today that sports already has governing agencies that define the rules for their respective disciplines, so his statement seems to agree with yours in that he does not believe that Congress has any business superseding those agencies' respective judgments with legislation.

(161,603 posts)It's a mountain out of a mole hill.
Those who participate in, let alone excel at sports, are already a tiny fraction of the population as it is. So manufacturing a "problem" to create yet another wedge issue as part of their policy platform versus supporting the concept of a diverse population that truly "makes America great", is just more of the same bankrupt nonsense that the GOP has devolved into promoting.

Meanwhile, there's one case of a trans athlete competing in sports, and conservatives lose their fucking minds because it's what all their stupid talk shows talk about.

(16,061 posts)I found out a couple months ago that in order to comply with current rules, schools can game the system in a few ways that completely undermine the intent of providing equal opportunity to women in sports.
Many colleges add dozens and dozens of extra female athletes on teams in sports like rowing that never are able to participate in actual rowing competitions because they don't need anywhere near those number of athletes. They will put 50 plus on a rowing team even though only a select few ever get to travel to rowing competitions. As long as they are "on the team" they count towards Title IX numbers even though they never get the opportunity to ever compete.
Then in something that seems ridiculous. a dozen or more men are typically added to women's basketball rosters to serve as a practice squad for training purposes. Amazingly, they are then able to be officially counted as women for purposes of Title IX compliance.
