Susan Wojcicki stepping down as CEO of YouTube
Source: CBS News
Susan Wojcicki is stepping down as CEO of YouTube after spending nine years as the head of the social media platform. In a blog post Thursday, Wojcicki said that she would "start a new chapter focused on my family, health, and personal projects." Neal Mohan, YouTube's chief product officer, will become the new CEO.
Wojcicki said Thursday that she would help with the CEO transition process and later take on an advisory role across Google and Alphabet. Wojcicki detailed how earlier in her career she joined Google, the owner of YouTube, when the search engine was being built by "a couple of Stanford graduate students," Larry Page and Sergey Brin.
"I saw the potential of what they were building, which was incredibly exciting, and although the company had only a few users and no revenue, I decided to join the team," she wrote. "It would be one of the best decisions of my life."
Wojcicki went on to have various responsibilities, including managing marketing, co-creating Google Image Search, leading Google's first Video and Book search, as well as early parts of AdSense's creation, working on the YouTube and DoubleClick acquisitions, and serving as senior vice president of Ads. Google purchased YouTube in 2006.

(23,298 posts)in the last year or so, the content has been taken over by video's featuring arrows, circles, people looking shocked at something, and hyperbolic language like "the real truth..." The content being thrust upon unsubscribed YouTube users is 99% crap. It's worthless clickbait, IMO.
Yes, it's probably good for their bottom line, because that garbage content usually has millions of views each, so millions of ads show for each, but it's still just garbage. If I see one of these videos, even if it's from a subscribed channel or something on a subject I might find interesting, I shun it like it's a video of a tRump speech. NOT HAPPENING!

(17,786 posts)Youtube has gone out of its way in the past several years to drive content providers to other platforms like twitch, tik-tok and instagram.
Now they are pressuring them to produce mostly "shorts", which re pissing off the subscribers.
The advertisers likely notice this. The board must be getting itchy.
It's just likely she has past her expiration date. Hpefully youtube won't go the way f twitter, but don't be so sure.

Also many government entities and news organizations post streams of their content there (and DU makes it embeddeble). I posted Biden's remarks that were streamed on Youtube both at Youtube and from the White House Live site - https://www.democraticunderground.com/1017805504
And other than maybe looking at some music videos, much of the rest of what is there is probably crap and I move past it. I do video content searches outside of the platform and then will use whatever links pop up that seem relevant (vs using the search in the platform itself).

(162,561 posts)street-style claypot rice cooking videos since I recently bought a Chinese sand pot.
I have making it in a Korean ttukbaegi but I had been unable to find a sand pot "in stock" (even at the International market that I frequent a couple times a year). Finally found one though so have been soaking/prepping/seasoning it so I can make some in that. Those things look like they can be semi-abused.

Cooking and other food related stuff is very good on youtube .

(3,242 posts)All the right-wing and Anti-Americanist channels that litter that hellscape criticising our government and promoting the previous regime.
There are also channels on YT that promote guns. What a wonderful thing to teach our children.

(21,066 posts)They now ban crazy conspiracies. 10 years ago you could watch a cooky 9/11 "Truther" video. Why would you want pro-Trump Channels banned? They also have plenty of pro-left-wing Channels to choose from. Let's not give the right-wing fuel when it comes to censorship.

(24,536 posts)Or maybe it was a clip from the old Beatle cartoons...? 🤔 I wish I could remember who posted it. Youtube was in its infancy then. And I think it was only music videos back then.
I'm not a fan of "shorts". And they now take up a lot of space.
I watch 24/7 cats, arts and crafts, music, houseplant info, tech how to videos... I really love YouTube.
