Former president's victory for an unprecedented third term ends fierce election marked by polarization

Oct.30.2022 8:20PM

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was elected president of Brazil again. The PT leader won the second round of the presidential dispute, held this Sunday (30), by defeating the current chief executive, Jair Bolsonaro (PL), the first president to fail to be reelected.

According to data from the calculation carried out by the TSE (Supreme Electoral Court), Lula has 50,83% of the valid votes, against 49,17% of the current president of the republic.

When Lula, 77, takes office in January, he will be the oldest holder of the position in history. It will be his third mandate in the government, which he led for two terms (2003-2010).

After the highly unusual 2018 campaign, when Brazilians elected an obscure federal deputy with a radical right-wing discourse in reaction to the current implosion of the traditional party system, this time the majority of the electorate sought comfort in a well-known figure.

Brazil Election 2022: Hardline far-right leader Jair Bolsonaro also called the “Trump of the Tropics” surged to victory four years ago.

Brazil Election 2022: Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro.(Reuters)

Jair Bolsonaro lost the presidential runoff election to Lulu on Monday becoming the first president since the 1990s to be voted out of office. As Bolsonaro was rejected at the ballot box, all presidents who attempted a second term before him were voted back in by the electorate.

Fernando Henrique Cardoso in 1998, Lula himself in 2006 and Dilma Rousseff in 2014 all had won a second four-year term. Electoral officials declared the election for Lula, who had 51 percent of the vote to 49 percent for Jair Bolsonaro.

Hardline far-right leader Jair Bolsonaro also called the “Trump of the Tropics” surged to victory four years ago and was very popular but the vitriolic leader came under fire for his disastrous handling of the Covid pandemic which left more than 680,000 dead in Brazil.

Under Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil saw a weak economy, attacks on democratic institutions and the worst deforestation in the Amazon rainforest in 15 years. Many fear that Jair Bolsonaro might not accept his defeat in the elections follwing his political role model former US president Donald Trump.

Brazil’s Polls Were Wrong. Now the Right Wants to Criminalize Them.

President Jair Bolsonaro and conservative lawmakers in Brazil are trying to make it illegal to publish polls that later do not match the election results.

By André Spigariol and Jack Nicas
Oct. 24, 2022

BRASÍLIA — In the first round of Brazil’s closely watched elections this month, the polls were off the mark. They significantly underestimated the support for the far-right incumbent, President Jair Bolsonaro, and other conservative candidates across the country.

Many on the right were furious, criticizing the pollsters as out of touch with the Brazilian electorate. That response was expected. What happened next was not. At the urging of Mr. Bolsonaro, some of Brazil’s leaders are now trying to make it a crime to incorrectly forecast an election.

Brazil’s House of Representatives has fast-tracked a bill that would criminalize publishing a poll that is later shown to fall outside its margin of error. The House, which is controlled by Mr. Bolsonaro’s allies, is expected to vote and pass the measure in the coming days.
The bill’s final shape and fate is unclear. House leaders have suggested they may soften the legislation, and its prospects in the Senate, where opponents of Mr. Bolsonaro are in the majority, appear far less certain.

Still, whatever the measure’s fate, the proposal and other efforts to investigate pollsters for their recent miscalculations are part of a broader narrative pushed by Mr. Bolsonaro and his allies, without evidence, that Brazil’s political establishment and the left are trying to rig the election against him.

they're also the product of Bolsonaro's attempts at voter intimidation and keeping people from the polls. Despite all the bullshit, Lula still won. I'll take it. My better half has friends down there and it's amazing the bullshit Bolsonaro has pulled. Not unlike what we're seeing in the states.
