Thousands commemorate Italy's fascist dictator Mussolini

Source: The Associated Press/By Colleen Barry

PREDAPPIO, Italy (AP) — Several thousand black-clad fascist sympathizers chanted and sang in praise of the late Italian dictator Benito Mussolini on Sunday as they marched to his crypt, 100 years after Mussolini entered Rome and completed a bloodless coup that gave rise to two decades of fascist rule.

The crowd of 2,000 to 4,000 marchers, many sporting fascist symbols and singing hymns from Italy’s colonial era, was more numerous than in the recent past, as the fascist nostalgics celebrated the centenary of the March on Rome.

On Oct. 28, 1922, black-shirted fascists entered the Italian capital, launching a putsch that culminated two days later when Italy’s king handed Mussolini the mandate to start a new government.

The crowd in Predappio, Mussolini’s birthplace and final resting place in the northern Emilia-Romagna region, also was apparently emboldened by the fact that a party with neo-fascist roots is heading an Italian government for the first time since World War II.

The story also says some of the crowd at the event, which AP says was attended by at least two Mussolini relatives, flashed fascist salutes.

God help us. Seriously.

That this sad period of Italy's history is stirring up again is ... well, sickening. That's probably the best term for it.

There have always been, currently are, and in the future will be those who prefer being ruled to being governed.

Being ruled means you don't have to take any responsibility in how you lead your life. Follow the rules and all is well. If something goes wrong it's not your fault.

Being governed requires stepping up, putting in an effort and accepting responsibility for your choices.

10. Anyone remember "Amarcord" (the Fellini film)...?

It dealt with a fictionalized version of his youth in a small town during the fascist era. When it was first released, it was regarded as poetic and lighthearted, a departure from his usual heavy-handed expressionist style. What he pointed out, and what most critics failed to notice, was that everyone in the town was behaving in an immature, childish manner. According to Fellini, that was his whole point – to show how life under fascism infantalizes those living under it. And that lots of people seem to like that.

Mussolini spearheaded a comically incompetent bid to restore the Roman Empire, showcasing an absurdly unprepared and unwilling army, and leaving Italy short of food, clothing, building materials, and natural resources. And you're celebrating this???

Edward G Robinson plays a heavily accented grape grower in Napa Valley. On his wall is a picture of Herbert Hoover and Mussolini

It's also interesting to see that to demonstrate his connection with America and his homeland, he portraits BOTH of the President AND Mussolini on the wall (you can see it behind Lena during the wedding. This was NOT unusual back in the day, as in the 20s and 30s Mussolini was revered by many Italians both at home and abroad.https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0021044/reviews?ref_=tt_urv
