House Republicans plot investigative revenge on January 6 panel as Trump itches for payback

Source: Melanie Zanona, Gabby Orr and Zachary Cohen, CNN

House Republicans are plotting revenge on the select committee investigating the January 6, 2021, insurrection, as the GOP weighs a broader effort to re-litigate some of Donald Trump's biggest election grievances if it recaptures the House majority.

The former President has been itching for payback and leaning heavily on his Capitol Hill allies to defend him against a recent slew of damaging revelations about his role in the deadly attack on the US Capitol. Now, as Republicans search for ways to undermine those findings, their party has started to lay the groundwork to investigate the select committee itself.

Republicans have already asked the January 6 panel to preserve a broad range of documents in its possession -- a signal they're preparing to force those records to be turned over should they wield powerful committee gavels next year. And privately, Republican sources say there have been discussions about subpoenaing members of the select committee, particularly Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming, who is fighting an uphill battle for reelection, and retiring Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, if both Republicans are private citizens next year.

It's an idea that has garnered support among allies of the former President. But House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy -- who has refused to comply with a subpoena from the select committee and has long held that the panel lacks the authority to haul in private citizens -- is cool to the idea, according to a Republican source familiar with his thinking.

The bloody minded intent and angry spirit of revenge is alive and very unwell. They feel that the attack on TFG is an attack on their most cherished privileges and SomeOne is going to do SomeThing about it SOON.

...And that may turn out to doing it themselves. Which makes me very uncomfortable. Sort of a feeling like when people were afraid they would be called out as communists during the Red Scare era.

These are main stream republican civilians. Many of them do not believe anything said by the committee or the witnesses. They appear to have no idea that it is TFG's inner most circles and loyalist Conservative Republicans who have spoken.

As long as House and Senate GOP members refuse to acknowledge the truth I suspect we will have potentially dangerous civil turmoil.

substantial and documented bent vote counting in Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan and a few other red states. TFG won on very thin ice in some odd locations.

It's the only way they know how to win. They certainly didn't persuade on domestic policy, or economics.

Obviously, the second-best option is to NEVER let the scum come to power again! An even better option is to toss all the criminals in the hoosegow and lose the keys. But we may need a Plan C, just in case. Suggestions?

22. 50 State Plan
Sat Jul 16, 2022, 02:04 PM
Jul 2022

I seem to remember that Gov Howard Dean wanted to implement a 50 state strategy as a means of promoting Democratic Party growth. Once upon a time, many of the currently red or red leaning states had a strong Democratic Party presence. Nowadays, it looks like the party is dominant only on the West Coast, in the Northeast, and a few other states. If you want to see more judges that aren't Federalist Society water carriers then control of the Senate is needed. If you want to stop or at least hold back gerrymandering, then getting back to all of the states is necessary. Farmers used to be part of Democratic Party constituency. Small business owners who have the dual threats of Amazon and Walmart should be part of the Democratic Party constituency.

It's nice to have the big money that sometimes appears to be the main concern of the national level party, but we need to be at all levels of government. I hate to say it but that's how the Republicans got to where they are now. They started local, built up a bench of political candidates, went to state level dominance, and then gained in national prominence. Watergate may have wounded the Republicans for a while but a simple playbook worked well for them and here we are now. This isn't rocket science.

Like they tried to delay the first impeachment after the Mueller report. Before being pressured by the base.

They want to run on Roe v Wade, sensible gun laws, and even the insurrection as long as its all only academic, and think that will be enough to carry them through November. If they can avoid making Republicans too uncomfortable, by unleashing Garland to follow though with charges after the congressional hearings, they will. And don't pretend that Biden doesn't have influence on what and how deep Garland will investigate or indict.

The problem is what if we lose the House and Senate? Then nothing will be done, and R's will STILL follow through with retribution anyways.

They think they're going to win the majority in the House after what the SCOTUS did to women's rights and after most of them deny the existence of the need for raped little girls to have access to abortions.

That's something powerful they're smoking.

If they regain control of Congress, it will be a non-stop revenge tour for the next two years. There will be absolutely nothing passed in Congress. If they retake the Senate, there will be no confirmations of judges or cabinet positions. Nothing.

And, if the debt ceiling has to be lifted again, I could see them letting us go over the cliff. These people care nothing about the United States or any of our institutions.

It will be a nightmare of epic proportions.

It is in the Bible. They see no choice in the matter. Revenge always escalates and the reason does not have to be factual. There is a reason we were founded as a secular nation and the Establishment Clause was written into the 1st Amendment. The circle was completed when the Supreme Court struck down the Constitution. Now anything goes as long as it can be found in the Bible and it starts with an eye for an eye. It will be enforced with violence.
