U.S. employers remained eager to hire in May, adding fuel to a red-hot labor market that continues to serve as a bulwark against growing recession fears.
Employers posted 11.3 million job openings in that month, down from a peak of 11.8 million in March and 11.4 million in April, but still well above pre-pandemic levels, according to a report released Wednesday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. (1)
Roughly 4.3 million Americans quit or changed jobs in May, reflecting a job market where workers continue to have the upper hand. Overall hiring, meanwhile, slowed slightly, with businesses adding 6.5 million workers in May, compared with 6.6 million a month earlier. Layoffs, meanwhile, remained near record lows.
Theres a whirlwind of recession chatter, but the U.S. labor market continues to be quite strong, said Nick Bunker, an economist at the jobs site Indeed. Demand for workers might be stagnating, but its still at very elevated levels. The labor market is not signaling a recession.

(8,622 posts)term covid keeps them from working. I don't think demand for workers is going to subside anytime soon. Plus, I'm not seeing any signs of economic downturn where I live.

(629 posts)you can readily find well-paying work is a GOOD time. I've lived through several periods when it was emphatically NOT GOOD.
This is not one of them, nor looks to be anytime soon.
Why is it we keep hearing about "mounting economic gloom?"

Well, not a problem then.
There will be lots of workers looking for a second or third job just to make ends meet.
Problem solved!
After the bubonic plague/ Black Death ravaged the population of Europe, farm workers could dictate their working conditions simply because they were scarce and in demand.
The same should happen in America.

chart puts into historical yesterday's #JOLTS data of 11.25 million job openings in May, down from April's 11.68 mm and 1.9 times the 5.95 mm registered #unemployed.
Also from the JOLTS report: At 2.8%, the #quit rate was 0.1 percentage points below May's record level.
