Hinckley to get full freedom 41 years after shooting Reagan
Source: Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) John Hinckley Jr., who shot President Ronald Reagan in 1981, is no longer a danger to himself or others and will be freed from court oversight this month as planned, a federal judge said Wednesday, capping Hinckleys four-decade journey through the legal and mental health systems.
U.S. District Court Judge Paul L. Friedman had freed Hinckley in September from all remaining restrictions but said his order wouldnt take effect until June 15. Wednesdays final hearing was scheduled to ensure Hinckley was continuing to do well in the community in Virginia where he has lived for years.
Hinckley did not attend the final hearing, and the judge made no changes to his plans to give Hinckley full freedom from court oversight.
Hes been scrutinized. Hes passed every test. Hes no longer a danger to himself or others, Friedman said at a hearing that lasted about an hour. Friedman devoted much of the hearing to talking about the long road of the case, which he was randomly assigned two decades ago, the third judge to be involved in the case.

Residents of Kingsmill in Williamsburg VA saw him as he was slowly released back into the world.

(7,206 posts)An assassination started WW1. The assassination of Tsar Alexander the II of Russia put the breaks on all reforms which eventually, under his grand son Nicholas II, led to the Communist take over...he was assassinated because a radical element didn't think he was pushing reforms fast enough. And Nicholas, due to the assassination, kept a hard line approach.
When JFK was assassinated, the USSR was worried it would be blamed and even in the Politburo they worried that some mid level KGB agent trying to make a name for himself might have orchestrated it. Too their relief, no one was involved.
He may be rehabilitated, so don't keep him at Supermax and put him in Club Fed. At the very least, have constant monitoring on him. Wouldn't surprise me if the USSR gasped when they heard Reagan was shot.

Russia has an autocratic tradition. It probably offers some cultural insight why efforts to engage democracy have failed on multiple occasions.
