Space Agency amid Western sanctions
Russia is suspending its cooperation on the International Space Station (ISS), according to Dmitry Rogozin, head of Russian space agency Roscosmos.
The country will also suspend its partnership with NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), Rogozin said.
Newsweek and others first reported the story.
In a series of tweets written in Russian on Saturday, Rogozin said: "I believe that the restoration of normal relations between partners in the International Space Station and other joint projects is possible only with the complete and unconditional lifting of illegal sanctions."

(2,933 posts)It was designed for interdependence between all the partners.
There are designs for alternative thrusters on paper, but none in place as far as I know.
But cargo ships and other visiting spacecraft could likely manage keeping the station in the right orbital altitude if required using their thrusters to adjust attitude if needed.
But they also need them for debris avoidance.
Kinda important.

(13,069 posts)That may need to happen sooner. It is very now and running out of useful life, so perhaps not a very big threat for Russia to make.

(49 posts)The removal of sanctions is possible only with the immediate, complete and unconditional end of the illegal war on, and the withdrawal of all occupying Russian and Belarusian forces from Ukraine, after reparations have been made to the Ukrainian people, and Putin et al have been tried for war crimes.

Im looking forward to seeing the first American women, people of color and non-American astronauts on the moon.

(21,102 posts)Surely nations with the resources and experience of the west can come up with a solution that excludes the Russians. They claim to be planning their own station, but that's just scribbles on paper with no real money behind it. Fact is, without ISS, the Russians really don't have a space program. Some heavy lift vehicles with no place to go. SpaceX could take over crew transfer and resupply, but maintaining orbit is the tricky part.
