Parler social network drops offline after Amazon pulls support
Source: BBC
The platform had been reliant on the tech giant's Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud computing service to provide its alternative to Twitter.
...snip...
Google and Apple had already removed Parler from their app stores towards the end of last week saying it had failed to comply with their content-moderation requirements.
However, it had still been accessible via the web - although visitors had complained of being unable to create new accounts over the weekend, without which it was not possible to view its content.

(238 posts)At this point, I have to wonder if it isn't just too late to do that (not that I'm upset by any means). Just logistically: you have to find a data center and they'd have to be willing to host you as well -- which, unless you find one that's unscrupulous might also be difficult.
Assuming they did find one: you need networking gear, storage, servers, and money to get all that. It's easily a month lead time at a minimum to procure and get all that stuff in place. It's one of the reasons why cloud computing took off--no long cycles to get stuff up and running, and no need for frontloaded cost.
Anyway, I'm sure they could find someone who doesn't give a shit to host them. But I'm hoping the barrier to reentry is so high they're relegated to the dustbin of internet history.

(5,950 posts)Having set up my companies servers in 2 data centers I can attest that it takes a lot of time. 1 month, sure if every single thing falls into place with no hiccups....and of course $$$$$. More than you think it will cost too.
...as to the cloud. Sure, it has its place, but I for one wouldn't put all my eggs (servers?) in that basket. Cloud is WAY more expensive then people realize because you are being charged for every data bit coming in and going out, and every byte of data being stored....oh and if you think that data is yours, better read up on that contract again. If you didn't read it and do some negotiation you may be in for a pretty big surprise.

AWS said in a statement that Parler, which has frequently billed itself as a free-speech alternative for people suspended from Twitter, had violated its terms of service. The platform has come under fire in recent days over its alleged role in coordinating the deadly riots at the U.S. Capitol last week, with Apple and Google both removing its app from their stores.
Parler CEO John Matze said in a statement that the network could be offline for up to a week, according to The Washington Post, but was even less sanguine on Fox News early Sunday.
t would put anybody out of business. I mean, this -- they could destroy anybody. If they did this to any app, any company, it would completely destroy them, Matze told Maria Bartiromo on Sunday Morning Futures.
And we're going to try our best to get back online as quickly as possible," he added. "But we're having a lot of trouble, because every vendor we talk to says they won't work with us, because, if Apple doesn't approve and Google doesn't approve, they won't........................

(13,538 posts)I understand the "free speech only applies to the govt" argument, but the majority of members there are just bitching & whining. The ones who are calling for revolt or any violence should be blocked. Facebook does it; many times INSTANTLY. They did it to one of my posts one time; the montage of trump fondling Ivanka (hardly inappropriate, since they were real pics). It had to be done by a "system" and not a person because it was instant.
So let them do the same thing. And isnt there some sort of "equal treatment" argument to be made here too?
This continuing forced division will end up hurting EVERYONE down the road. Including voices from the left. Just watch.
