Early Anchorage city election results favor incumbents in school board race and keep Assembly majority

Initial returns in Anchorage’s municipal elections show the Assembly’s majority will remain in place. Two incumbents on the Anchorage School Board are ahead of challengers. And most of this year’s bonds and tax levies are on track to pass, if early results hold.

As of Tuesday night, 39,142 ballots had been counted, putting preliminary turnout at 16.4%. That number will climb: As of Tuesday evening, Municipal Clerk Jamie Heinz said the city’s election center had another 8,636 ballots in its custody that had not yet been verified and tabulated. Additional ballots cast at voting centers, dropped in secure boxes or put in the mail Tuesday were also not part of the preliminary results.

In this year’s Assembly race, the candidates who are on track to win are incumbents Daniel Volland in downtown and Kameron Perez-Verdia in West Anchorage, as well as newcomers Erin Baldwin Day in Midtown, Yarrow Silvers in East Anchorage and Keith McCormick in South Anchorage. In the Eagle River race, Jared Goecker is solidly ahead of two other candidates.

Anchorage School Board incumbents Margo Bellamy and Kelly Lessens are leading their challengers.
