Alabama House approves max price for voter rolls, restrictions on voter information

The Alabama House of Representatives Thursday approved a bill that cuts the costs of voter rolls but restricts the information available on them.

HB 67, sponsored by Rep. Jamie Kiel, R-Russelville, sets the cost of an electronic voter list at a maximum cost of $1,000. Currently, the Alabama Secretary of State’s office charges one cent per electronic voter record; $1 per page of voter record and a mix of fees for online voter records.

The bill also forbids the publication of Social Security numbers and email addresses. This information cannot be used for commercial purposes.

“[Voters] can expect that the state of Alabama will not sell their phone numbers, and that the state of Alabama will not be complicit in their spam calls being multiplied,” Kiel said after the House adjourned on Thursday.
