He was one of the most liberal members of the Church. He was active against the war and his only daughter eventually became a lawyer working for tribes on Native American legal issues.

When he retired he and his wife sold their house and moved so that they could live near her and help her in their work by doing investigations.

You really can't judge a book by its cover.

Of course, back then TV shows actually frequently tried to back positive social change. All in the Family, Kung Fu, The Waltons, and similar series all pushed anti-racist, non-violence, and inclusiveness.

Nothing like that nowadays. It's nothing but reality TV, insults, and sex jokes. Probably why Trump won. Most Americans are now more impressed by someone who is a fucking jerk and constantly insults other people than people who are actually decent human beings and treat each other with respect.
