Espaillat ousted in New York House primary by Mamdani-backed candidate

Democratic socialist Darializa Avila Chevalier has defeated Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D) in the Democratic primary for his House seat, Decision Desk HQ projects, notching a win for New York City’s socialist movement.

The race for the 13th Congressional District was one of several tests of influence Tuesday for New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a fellow Democratic socialist who endorsed Chevalier against the five-term incumbent.

Mamdani’s campaign trail appearances with Chevalier injected her bid with significant momentum, on the heels of his history-making mayoral win last year. On Tuesday, that support appeared to help Chevalier push past Espaillat in the district that makes up parts of Harlem, Washington Heights and The Bronx.

My opinion of him was... mixed. I had a lot of interactions with him when I was a teacher and union leader.

Look to Lauren Underwood as a guide as to how to be an awesome Congresswoman. In since 2018 and getting legislation passed. Of all of the under 40 crowd? She's the the best at her job.

Good stuff to know, especially when most of everything here can tend to revolve around the Pacific Northwest. Go Illinois!

“In 2018, Underwood was elected to the United States House of Representatives, defeating Republican incumbent Randy Hultgren. Upon her swearing in, she became the youngest Black woman to serve in Congress.”

When the dust settles, it does look like just ONE New York incumbent will fend off their DSA-backed challenger this year (Jordan Wright in #AD70 in Harlem)

Nancy was so good at her job that the budding fascists spent millions on her hate campaign.

And still, she was not liked by everyone.
