Former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander is projected to successfully unseat an incumbent congressman in New Yorks Democratic primaries Tuesday, marking another win for a growing coalition of progressive candidates.
Lander, who earned an endorsement from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, had criticized his opponent, Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.), as too moderate and too accommodating of the Israeli government.
Its time to elect Democrats wholl fight, not fold, against the forces of authoritarianism & corporate greed, Lander wrote in a social media post as he cast an early ballot Sunday.
Lander, a longtime progressive, pitched himself to the left of Goldman, an heir of blue jean entrepreneur Levi Strauss. Landers campaign launch featured an advertisement showing him being arrested by federal agents when he attempted to accompany a man attending proceedings in immigration court. (Prosecutors did not bring charges in that case.) He was arrested a second time during a sit-in protest with other elected officials. In that instance, Lander opted for a bench trial and was recently found not guilty of a misdemeanor obstruction charge.

Glad that Lander won. He helped Mamdani beat Cuomo which seems to have worked out for his political career as he is likely going to be one of our next members of Congress as the winner of the primary in that district Democratic voters far outnumber Republicans for the general election.

(5,823 posts)To see this. And to see people cheering a coffee shop abusevlDan Goldman for buying a cup of coffee.
As a Jewish New Yorker, I'm profoundly disappointed and frightened to see Hews demonized in my own city.
This is not good for Democrats.

The right hates Jews because we apparently killed Jesus and the left hates Jews because of Israel.

(27,886 posts)Now, on Sunday early voting I was told I was I was inactive! Wth?!
I missed 2025 bc of a voting place mix up on Election Day on my part. But I can't figure that missing just one year - I voted early in 2024 - would render me inactive! My voting record is like 96% since 1971.
So I couldn't vote! Of course, I re-registered right then and there. I'll have to check in a few weeks to see if I'm back in.
.
But TY for the reminder - re; the day after Oct 7 her participation in the protests- did only hear that once so I forgot.
Anyway, I will vote for her vs a Republican - but I guess I'll have keep an eye on her once she's sworn in in 2027.

(71,565 posts)This is what primaries are for...and I believe we need better leaders willing to fight for us. The next generation is getting read to grab the reins...somethings boomers did well and really changed the world...somethings we didn't. This new generation is moving left. So fight hard in primaries to get the one you want elected but when the new Democrat is selected than we vote Democratic period. I was very unhappy with the DNC's attitude in the Maine election. Sending money to candidates when I can afford it not the DNC.

I want the very best for him.

This is going to really fire up younger voters a lot and that is exactly what we need as a party. Folks, we have major momentum on our left flank and we should be celebrating like mad right now! A whole lot of young people are winning tonight and it's a beautiful thing to see all that energy ⚡
