https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026/may/25/uk-heat-may-temperature-record-weatherThe fierce heat sweeping Europe over the bank holiday weekend has beaten the UKs all-time temperature record for May, with highs of up to 35C still to come on Monday afternoon.
A temperature of 33.5C was recorded at Londons Heathrow on Monday lunchtime, according to provisional data from the Met Offfice, beating the previous May record that was set in Camden Square in 1922 and reached again in Tunbridge Wells and Regents Park in 1944.
The heat is set to persist through the week, with a 35C peak expected again on Tuesday. The Met Office has forecast highs of 31C for Wednesday and 30C on Thursday.

Met Office: 34.8C would be exceptional in mid-summer let alone in May
Following the news that 34.8C has been recorded at London's Kew Gardens, the Met Office says this is a temperature that would "exceptional in the UK even in mid summer, let alone in May".
With this latest reading, it says, today is now the hottest May day on record by a full two degrees Celsius, after the previous 32.8C record was broken earlier today.

Plus joint warmest in Ireland:
Its been the joint warmest May day on record across the island of Ireland, too, as temperatures climbed to 28.4C in Oak Park, County Carlow.
That matches the previous May record of 28.4C set in County Kerry in 1997.
Irish weather service, Met Éireann, is expecting similar temperatures on Tuesday with a chance of a new temperature record being set.
