CBS News shutters its storied radio news service after nearly a century, ending an era

https://wtop.com/national/2026/03/cbs-news-shutters-its-storied-radio-news-service-after-nearly-a-century-ending-an-era/

NEW YORK (AP) — CBS News said Friday it will shut down its storied radio news service after nearly 100 years of operation, ending an era and blaming challenging economic times as the world moves on to digital sources and podcasts

When it went on the air in September 1927, the service was the precursor to the entire network, giving a youthful William S. Paley a start in the business. Famed broadcaster Edward R. Murrow’s rooftop reports during the Nazi bombing of London during World War II kept Americans listening anxiously.

Today, CBS News Radio provides material to an estimated 700 stations across the country and is known best for its top-of-the-hour news roundups. The service will end on May 22, the network said Friday.

I like the immediacy of it. But my niece, then 19, told me about two years ago that "young people don't listen to radio".

(Judging from her, they wear headphones and watch TikTok and YouTube videos all day, work one summer at a job her mom found her for about 8-10 hours a week, and after that just stay home without going to college or getting any other jobs, but I digress).

There's a ton of good radio out there. It's good for sports and traffic and weather (when we're in the car) and I listen to public radio and CBC a lot and both are very valuable.

Radio is a connector, too. This is just one more step towards the total Balkanization of media.

for decades. He started in the 50s and retired in the 90s and began teaching. He was a wonderful professor, one of my favorites. So sad to hear this.

It's now a sports station, the second on the AM dial.

to WBBM radio in the middle of the night (when I can’t sleep) and they always have CBS news at top of the hour and other reports from them. Guess as of May 22nd it will be no more.
