I was very young but I remember the constant new revelations and breaking news. To me, I was shocked when Nixon resigned but this feels like the same buildup.
Anyone else alive then agree?

(53,589 posts)treatment, but because Republicans are, by and large, a bunch of slobbering enablers. When Watergate happened, a delegation of Republican Congressional members went to the White House and told Nixon he had a choice: resign or be impeached. Today they'd go to the White House and massage his feet.

(21,851 posts)was it seemed that no Republicans were questioning Nixon until they did. I do think this is much harder, much more serious, the media is different, etc. Still, for the first time during this nightmare, it feels different

(28,107 posts)Almost every Republican except Lowell Weicker (sp?) of Connecticut fought to save Nixon until the transcripts came out and even then many stuck with him until the evidence was overwhelming.

(36,961 posts)...but you're right, the chronology just keeps rolling out one revelation after another. Makes it hard for tsf to get out in front of them.
Yes, but the GOP of that day was not a cult and Nixon was not revered as a God by most republican politicians. So there was not nearly the amount of obstruction by the GOP as there is today. But the bottom line is that Watergate was a political scandal, todays pedophile scandal is much more serious in my view.

One can only hope, pray, spill ones beer, etc., that enough in the orange fatty's cult will start noticing the stench.

I lived through Watergate, it always the cover up that eventually breaks down.

(5,042 posts)So, what I think is happening now (unlike during the Watergate era) is that a few GOP members are starting to feel the heat. The Polls and last few elections is telling them that their seats may be in jeopardy., not that they have had a change of heart or concern for the nation, but fear for their seats.
Slowly but surely, fear is making some of them wake up and become WOKE. This combined with how unpopular Trump, his Cabinet and his policies are to the majority of the nation.

(16,039 posts)In Watergate they were cooperating and allowed an actual investigation to proceed. Eventually they went to Nixon and told him to resign. Can you ever imagine that happening with this bunch. Instead they are actively obstructing.
