In Californias crowded gubernatorial race, one candidate has raised far more cash than any other.
Of the approximately two-dozen candidates currently running to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom in November, new campaign filings show Tom Steyer far outpacing the competition in the early money race, as his campaign accounts for over half of the funds raised so far.
But theres a caveat to his big advantage: Its fueled almost entirely by his own money.
Steyer has begun the year with the biggest campaign war chest, by a wide margin. He has about $38.3 million, according to the most recent filings released Monday. Thats more than six times the next-largest total among candidates still in the race.

Fiendish Thingy
(22,479 posts)Steyers millions are just going to help put a Republican in the governors mansion in Sacramento.
There are over a dozen Dem candidates, and just three republicans.
California has a jungle primary where the top two vote getters advance to the general election in November.
Do the math.
A bunch of Dems, including Steyer, need to drop out, or they are going to hand the race to the republicans.

(24,465 posts)I will say that he self funded an ad to support Newcom's redistricting proposition here and I think that really helped. His heart is in the right place.
