MI-13: Detroit attorney enters Michigan's 13th Congressional District race as independent candidate

Maurice Morton, an attorney from Detroit, has entered the race for Michigan’s 13th Congressional District as an independent.

The seat, currently held by U.S. Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-Detroit), is a deep blue district that covers much of Detroit.

Morton said in a press release from his campaign that he decided to run as an independent candidate as a rejection of partisan politics, “because my allegiance is to the people of Michigan’s 13th Congressional District — not a party label.”

“I know families are struggling to make ends meet, seniors worry about their health and security, and too many hardworking people including young people see little opportunity to get ahead,” Morton added in the press release. “Michigan’s 13th Congressional District needs a leader with a bold plan who will bridge the divide between business and labor, create good-paying jobs, make housing and healthcare affordable, and deliver real results for every community across Detroit, Downriver, Grosse Pointe and the entire district.”
