It might well have been on her mind when she called. Suggestions to make lemonade out of lemons.
*Ask her questions you might want to ask about her life, family history, long-gone relatives.
*Send HER a card or present on YOUR birthday. It was her birth-day too, in a way.
There’s no mail delivery from heaven, so I haven’t gotten a birthday greeting from Mom since I was 25.

Wish yourself a happy birthday, too. It counts.

PS Every human life is a miracle, including yours. Take up a new creative hobby for your 65ht year. Painting, drawing, poetry…whittling, singing, whatever.

Let mommy go....my mom year before she died, she was up and going till 96, looked at me on Mother's Day and said, "Are you going to wear that?" In a very judgy voice looking down at me. My daughter in her 40's laughed nervously. I have always dressed a bit bohemian and tried to wear my nicest pants and button down shirt. I have never worn make up and other stuff like my mom.

Let's just say, to the end it was challenging but it did end. I wish we had better relationship but you can't change people.

So live for today and the people in your life that give you joy.

I know how that feels somewhat. Here is a story about it. Work in retail management, have to work way more around holidays. Had to open and close the store night on Christmas eve and since the day after Christmas is huge in retail and we are closed on Christmas day I had to set the store up for before the big sale on the day after Christmas day. So work 8am to 10 pm. My Mom was getting sick and I figured I wanted to spend Christmas day with her I got home from work about 10:30 pm Christmas eve, packed up and drove 5 hours to her house. Got there about 4 am went to sleep, woke up at 11am to go to Christmas dinner, (no idea why my Aunt and Uncle have Christmas dinner so early, they always do) Ate and then we all opened presents. I was working 10-12 hour days and only had one day off each week in December and they counted Christmas day as my day off since the store was closed so I only had 1 day off in two weeks except for Christmas day. I had gotten all of them presents, My Aunt, Uncle, Mom, Big Brother, Little Brother, Sister in Law, 2 nephews and niece, and my moms dog Lennon. He was an Akido. Cool dog. Anyways we are opening presents, so we all sit down and my Aunt goes to the pile and hands each present out to who it is for saying their name.Everyone starts getting a pile of presents and my name is not being called out at all. Finally near the end my Aunt calls out my name and gives me an envelope. I open it up and its a $25 gas gift card. That's all I got. I took pics of everyone and my niece and nephews with their presents and just kinda didn't react at all and acted normally. We finished all that and then went back to my moms house. I got my stuff gave everyone hugs and kisses and left about 6 pm getting home around midnight. Went to sleep and back to work at 6 am. I know I shouldn't be upset about any of that, but dang I gave up my one day off to travel and see them, sleep depriving myself and I got a gas gift card for less than the gas it took to get there. For Christmas. Fuck I'd a liked just getting a candy bar with a note from them, or a card or something. Just something small from a couple of them instead of just a gift card from my Uncle and Aunt. I didn't go back for Christmas the next three and my Mom died before the 4th. If I could I'd do whatever I had to do to go see her this Christmas.
It's just a story. Nothing about this is me suggesting in any way how you should process what happened to you. If anything its just that Family is fucking hard some times.
Keep on keeponing.
Eko.

I live abroad. Since moving permanently 3.5 years ago, not a single family member has visited. Mind, they’ve all taken multiple holidays elsewhere. I was thinking of going back quickly before Christmas this year, but have decided against it.
It’s my uncle’s 75th. I’ll send a card. I’m broke and am always excited to visit until I arrive and feel like an intrusion. Plus I spend loads of money I don’t have and keep myself on UK hours so I am able to work.

As someone old enough to be your mother, I confess I am often forgetful about such things. My family is pretty much used to it and they are usually late remembering MY birthday as well.
When I see something I think someone will like I try to buy it and give it to them, even if it isn’t the proper date.
I love my family even if I forget these important days - sent my son his Christmas present last week just to be sure.
Thanks for the reminder I should do better.

I know the feeling because I had a similar thing happen. My wife and I had been married for 2 years and she wished me a happy birthday. But no gift. I let it slide knowing her paychecks weren't all that big.

Two weeks later I come home from work on a Friday and there is a note on the table from her telling me to come down to the bar she used to work at that was owned by mutual friends of ours. She hadn't worked there in about 3 years. When I walked in she was at the bar and she pointed out to me the manager she used to work for. He came over and my wife made a big deal about the shirt he was wearing and said that today was his birthday and she had bought it for him.

Needless to say the marriage ended.
